Kim Shin-rok’s Role as Park Jung-ja: A Resurrected Soul Tormented by Hell

In her role as Park Jung-ja, a mother resurrected from hell after a brutal supernatural demise, Kim Shin-rok delivers a deeply emotional performance. When asked about her character’s experience in hell, she chillingly responded, “That’s… something words cannot explain.” Her transformation from a devoted mother in Hellbound Season 1 (2021) to a fragmented, tortured soul in Season 2 has drawn widespread acclaim, with viewers describing her performance as “a masterclass in acting” and “otherworldly.”

In an interview at a Seoul cafe, Kim shared her approach to capturing the psychological torment of her character, stating, “I portrayed Park Jung-ja as fragmented and broken, making her voice inconsistent to convey the aftermath of her experiences in hell.” Her commitment to her character’s psychological depth was evident from the first day of shooting. The production crew was reportedly left speechless, with director Yeon Sang-ho saying, “Kim Shin-rok is at her peak these days, so let’s go with it.”

Rising Fame Through Dedication to Craft and Expanding Boundaries

With a career spanning two decades, Kim Shin-rok first stepped into the spotlight on the theater stage in 2004. Over the years, she has meticulously honed her craft, taking on diverse roles and embracing new challenges across film and television. Her popularity soared with her performance in Hellbound Season 1, and since then, she has continued to make bold choices, such as her recent role in Uprising, the opening film of the Busan International Film Festival. Originally a male role, her character Beom-dong, a militia fighter, was reimagined for her by director Kim Sang-man after he witnessed her powerful presence in Hellbound.

Kim’s background is as unique as her performances. Originally studying geography in college, she discovered acting through a university theater club. Her journey wasn’t easy; a period of illness brought her back to her hometown, where she struggled with self-doubt. A pivotal conversation with her younger brother inspired her to recover and pursue her dream with renewed purpose. After graduating, Kim joined a theater troupe in Daehangno, but facing initial difficulties, she chose to refine her skills through advanced studies in drama and international theater experience.

Determined to deepen her understanding of acting, Kim eventually took her ambition abroad, spending a year at a practical acting school in New York. By 2013, with additional support from a grant by the Korea Arts Council, she had traveled through international theater scenes, continually expanding her methods and artistry.
