The pain of losing a father does not simply fade away. For Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, that grief keeps showing up at the worst possible moments. The April 26 episode of CBS’s ‘Marshals’ proved once again that John Dutton’s death is far from healed for his youngest son.

While leading a dangerous rescue mission, Kayce could not shake the weight of his family’s violent past. The missing piece in his life—his father—felt more present than ever, even in death.

Kayce Blames Himself and the ‘Dutton Curse’ for a Kidnapping

The latest ‘Marshals’ episode put Kayce and his team in a race against time. They had to find Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) after Randall Clegg (Michael Cudlitz) took her. The situation turned personal very quickly.

Kayce pulled his teammate Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) aside during the chaos. He spoke openly about something he calls the “Dutton curse.” He explained that Clegg has held a grudge against his family for years. Then Kayce admitted the hardest part. He said he personally took down one of Clegg’s sons in the past. So in his mind, Andrea being taken was completely his fault.

That is a heavy weight to carry while trying to save someone’s life. But it shows exactly where Kayce’s head is at in this show. He is not just a marshal doing a job. He is a Dutton. That name brings a long list of enemies and consequences with it.

The team did rescue Andrea safely. They also got Randall Clegg into custody. But after the action stopped, Kayce had a moment that stopped viewers as well.

“I really wish my father was still around, so he could see Montana rid itself of the Cleggs.”

It was just one small line in the episode. But it hit very hard. That is exactly the kind of thing a person says when they have been carrying someone’s memory for a long time. The grief just spills out when you least expect it.

John Dutton died in the final season of ‘Yellowstone.’ The way it happened made it even harder for fans to process. It first looked like it might have been self-inflicted. But later, everyone learned that Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) had arranged a murder-for-hire scheme while she was involved with Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) , who is John’s son and Kayce’s older brother.

The Dutton family, which always held itself together through sheer will, got torn apart from the inside. In the series finale, Beth (Kelly Reilly) killed Jamie for his part in their father’s death. It remains one of the most gut-wrenching moments the show ever produced.

Luke Grimes Explains Why John Dutton Had to Go

The 42-year-old actor has spoken openly about what it was like for the show to lose Kevin Costner. He told People magazine that while some fans felt “cheated” by the way things ended, he sees it very differently.

Grimes said all the cast members who worked with Costner for his entire run were lucky to do so as long as they did. He also stated that killing off the show’s father figure was always part of the story plan. It pushed the story forward. It allowed viewers to see if the Dutton children could keep the ranch together after their father died.

Grimes added something many fans may not know. The character of John Dutton was supposed to die much earlier in the series. So in a way, viewers got to see much more of that character than the original creator ever intended.

The Clegg Family Feud Connects Back to a Missing Father

The April 26 episode also pushed forward a rivalry that ‘Marshals’ introduced this season. Randall Clegg and the Clegg family are a thorn in Kayce’s side. Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) described the Cleggs earlier in the season as being like the Duttons but without the money and power.

The family has been in Montana for generations. But they never gained the influence of John Dutton and his clan. Now Kayce is dealing with the fallout of that old hatred. And he has to do it without his father’s guidance or backup.

John Dutton was the one who built the family’s power. He was the one who kept enemies like the Cleggs in check. Without him around, Kayce is left to finish those fights alone. That is why seeing Montana finally rid itself of the Cleggs would have meant so much to John. And it is why Kayce feels the loss so sharply in that moment of victory.

‘Marshals’ airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
