President Donald Trump found himself in hot water after posting an AI-generated picture on his Truth Social account. Many religious leaders and supporters saw the image and felt it showed Trump dressing up and acting like Jesus Christ. The backlash was fast and loud, with words like “blasphemy” being used by people who usually support the president.
Trump quickly deleted the post on Monday. He told reporters that people got it all wrong. He said the picture was meant to show him as a doctor helping sick people get better, not as a religious figure. But the damage was already done, and the internet was full of angry reactions from both political sides.
Then came a strong defense from a very important voice in the Christian community. Franklin Graham, the well-known evangelist and son of the famous Billy Graham, stepped in to explain why he thought the criticism was unfair.
Graham Says Critics Made “A Lot to Do About Nothing”
Franklin Graham took to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday to share his thoughts on the whole situation. He made it clear right away that he does not believe Donald Trump would want to hurt anyone’s religious feelings.
“I do not believe President Trump would knowingly depict himself as Jesus Christ — that would certainly be inappropriate,” Graham wrote. He added that he was thankful the president took the post down as soon as he understood that some people were confused by it.
Graham looked closely at the image and saw something very different from what the critics saw. He pointed out that the picture did not have any of the usual religious symbols that you would expect to see in a picture of Jesus.
“When I looked at the illustration, I didn’t jump to the same conclusion as some. There were no spiritual references — no halo, there were no crosses, no angels. It was a flag, soldiers, a nurse, fighter planes, eagles, the Statue of Liberty, and I think this is a lot to do about nothing.”
Graham believes that the strong negative reaction is not about protecting religion. He thinks it is just Donald Trump‘s political enemies looking for any reason to attack him. He called it “ill-intended speculation” from people who are always trying to make the president look bad.
Trump Defends Himself With the “Doctor” Explanation
Donald Trump did not stay quiet while others talked about his post. When reporters asked him about the picture on Monday, he had a simple answer ready.
“I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor and had to do with the Red Cross,” Trump told reporters outside the White House. “It’s supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better. And I do make people better. I make people a lot better.”
The president said he decided to remove the image because he did not want anyone to stay confused about what it meant. He blamed the “fake news” media for making the story bigger than it needed to be.
But not everyone on his side bought that explanation. Some of his strongest supporters were still upset.
A Second Image Appears: Jesus Hugging Trump
The story did not end with the deleted post. Just days later, Donald Trump shared another AI picture on Truth Social. This time, the image showed Jesus Christ with his arm around Trump’s shoulder and a hand on his chest. Both figures had their eyes closed, leaning into each other against a bright background with an American flag.
Trump wrote a caption that seemed ready for more arguments. “The Radical Left Lunatics might not like this, but I think it is quite nice!!! President DJT,” he posted.
Franklin Graham also had something to say about this second image. He actually liked it.
“I must say that I like the fact that this is a picture of Jesus whispering in his ear, or at least His hand on his shoulder, guiding him,” Graham wrote. “We all need that — we all need to be listening to Jesus.”
Graham reminded everyone that Donald Trump did not create these images. He just reposted them because he thought they were nice. Graham said he would have done the same thing.
Not Everyone Agrees: Marjorie Taylor Greene Fires Back
While Franklin Graham defended the president, other conservative voices were not having it. Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who used to be a strong Trump ally, attacked Graham publicly for his stance.
“Franklin Graham making excuses for Trump posting himself as Jesus is one of the worst things I’ve seen,” Greene wrote on X.
She pointed out that the image had more than just a doctor. She claimed there was even “Satan” imagery in the background of the original picture. Greene called Trump’s explanation an “absurd lie” and said the president knows exactly what he is doing when he posts things like this.
“Trump knows what he is doing. He knows what he posted. He knows how to manipulate his followers. And he’s not sorry, he never apologized. Instead he lied, and said he was a doctor, which is also absurd,” Greene wrote.
She ended her response by quoting a Bible verse from Matthew about watching out for false prophets. Her message was clear: actions speak louder than words, and she was not impressed by Graham’s defense.
Other Christian Leaders Also Spoke Out
Franklin Graham was not the only religious leader to comment, but he was one of the few to defend Donald Trump so strongly. Other Christian figures were much more critical.
Conservative writer Megan Basham called the original post “OUTRAGEOUS blasphemy” and demanded that Trump apologize to the American people and to God. Riley Gaines, a former college swimmer turned conservative podcaster, questioned why the president would post such an image and wrote that “God shall not be mocked.”
Sean Feucht, a Christian activist, wrote on X that the post should be deleted immediately because there is no context where such an image is acceptable.
Even David Brody, a journalist with the Christian Broadcasting Network, said the post crossed a line. “A supporter can back the mission and reject this,” he wrote.
Trump’s Fight With the Pope Made Things Worse
The timing of the image posts added more fuel to the fire. Donald Trump had just spent time attacking Pope Leo online before sharing the Jesus pictures. The president called the pope “WEAK on Crime” and “terrible for Foreign Policy.”
The pope, who is the first American to hold his position, responded without getting into a fight. He said his job is to talk about peace, not politics, and quoted the Bible verse “Blessed are the peacemakers.”
This fight with the pope made the AI images feel even more strange to many religious voters. Some experts said Donald Trump was taking a big risk by upsetting the very people who helped him win elections.

Graham Stands Firm on Trump’s Record
Despite all the arguments, Franklin Graham did not change his position. He used his post to praise Donald Trump for his work on religious issues during his time as president.
“He is the most pro-Christian, pro-life president in my lifetime, and he doesn’t shy away from it,” Graham wrote.
Graham also shared a hope that Donald Trump and Pope Leo could meet at some point. He wants the pope to thank the president for protecting religious liberty for Catholics and people of all faiths. With both men showing strong opinions, such a meeting would certainly be interesting to watch.
