The “Yellowstone” universe keeps expanding, and the newest addition to the family is stirring up serious trouble for Kayce Dutton. The spinoff series “Marshals” introduces a fresh face from a very old Montana family ready to challenge everything Kayce stands for.

Michael Cudlitz, known for his roles in “The Walking Dead” and “Band of Brothers,” steps into the boots of Randall Clegg. He is the head of a ranching family that has been in Montana for just as many generations as the Duttons. This sets the stage for a battle over land, power, and respect in the modern West.

Who is Randall Clegg in ‘Marshals’?

Randall Clegg isn’t just a random bad guy Kayce meets on the job. He represents a deep-rooted rival dynasty. Like the Duttons, the Cleggs have controlled land and resources in Montana for a very long time.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut explained exactly where this family fits into the world of the show. He said the Cleggs are like the other side of the ranching coin.

“He represents a family similar to the Duttons in terms of being in Montana for a long time, going back many generations, causing some trouble in the area. But if the Duttons are sort of the upper crust of the ranching world, they’re on the other side of that.”

The tension between the two families is instant. In a teaser clip for the show, Randall Clegg mocks Kayce for losing his family’s power. He says, “Family name doesn’t carry water anymore so you gotta hide behind a federal badge? How the mighty have fallen.” Kayce quickly fires back, “Still got a long way to go before I make it down to you.”

This exchange shows that the Cleggs and Duttons have a long history. There is old bad blood between them that goes way beyond Kayce’s new job.

The Clegg Family Becomes a Large Thorn in Kayce’s Side

“Marshals” follows Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) after the events of “Yellowstone.” He leaves much of the ranch life behind to work as a U.S. Marshal with his former Navy SEAL team leader. Even with a federal badge, Kayce cannot escape the ghosts of Montana’s past.

The show’s producers are very clear about the role Randall Clegg plays in the story. He is not just a one-time visitor. He is set up to be a major problem for Kayce throughout the season.

Hudnut teased that the conflict between these two men will be a driving force of the drama.

“The Clegg family were thorns in the Duttons’ side in the past, and Randall Clegg is going to become a very large thorn in Kayce’s side this season. Those two go head to head a few times.”

The rivalry officially explodes in Episode 3 of the series, which aired on March 15, 2026. The episode features a violent standoff on the Broken Rock Reservation involving mining trucks. Randall and his brothers get caught in the middle, and gunfire breaks out, forcing Kayce to step in.

Why Michael Cudlitz is Perfect for the Role of Randall Clegg

Bringing in Michael Cudlitz to play Randall Clegg was a smart move by the casting team. Cudlitz has a long history of playing tough, commanding characters. He is best known as Sgt. Abraham Ford on “The Walking Dead,” where he played a loud, strong survivor.

He also played the famous villain Lex Luthor on “Superman & Lois.” That role showed he can play a smart and threatening antagonist. Before those, he was in the legendary war series “Band of Brothers.”

Hudnut admitted he had been trying to work with Cudlitz for a long time, even when he was working on the show “SEAL Team.” Getting him for “Marshals” was a big win for the series.

Randall Clegg’s Place in the ‘Yellowstone’ Universe

Unlike some villains who want to destroy the Duttons completely, Randall Clegg feels very real. He is a rival businessman and landowner. His fights with Kayce are usually about land disputes, development rights, and jurisdiction.

This fits perfectly with the themes of the “Yellowstone” franchise. The shows always focus on who has the right to the land. Randall Clegg represents the other old families who are tired of the Duttons getting all the attention and power.

His role is set to be a recurring one. Fans can expect to see him pop up in multiple episodes, creating problems for Kayce as he tries to balance his job as a Marshal with the weight of his family name.

“Marshals” airs on CBS on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT. It is also available to stream on Paramount+.
