The wait is over for cozy mystery fans. Brooke Shields leads the new detective series “You’re Killing Me,” which started streaming on Acorn TV on May 18, 2026. The six-episode show brings a fresh twist to the murder mystery genre. Shields plays a bestselling novelist who teams up with a young podcaster to solve real crimes in a small Maine town. The show mixes laughs with suspense. It also gives Shields a chance to show her comedy skills while solving fictional murders.
The series arrives as part of Acorn TV’s “Murder Mystery May” lineup. It offers a lighter take on crime dramas. Viewers who enjoy shows like “Murder, She Wrote” will find a lot to like here. But this time, the detective has a Gen Z partner who knows all about forensic evidence and internet sleuthing.
‘You’re Killing Me’ Plot Summary
The story takes place in the made-up town of Founders Cove, Maine. Shields plays Allison “Allie” Chandler, a successful mystery writer. She created the popular Selena St. Cloud book series. At the start of the first episode, Allie receives a writing award. But her publisher wants her to retire her famous character and write something more modern. Allie refuses to change her style.
Things get messy when her long-time friend Nash Gilbert, a literary critic, dies after falling from a hotel balcony. The police think it was an accident. But Allie believes it was murder. At the same time, she meets Andrea “Andi” Walker (Amalia Williamson). Andi is a true-crime podcaster who once had a popular show. Now she is trying to make a comeback. The two women do not get along at first. Andi once said in an interview that mystery novels like Allie’s are not realistic. But they soon realize they need each other to find the truth.
The pair start investigating together. Andi uses modern tools like forensic evidence and online searches. Allie relies on her writer’s instincts and people skills. Their different methods cause funny arguments. But they also help solve the case faster than the police can.
Brooke Shields as Allison Chandler
Brooke Shields brings life to Allison Chandler. The character is 60 years old. She is a divorced mom with a grown son. Allie lives in a beautiful house by the water. She is wealthy and famous. But she feels pressure to stay relevant in a changing world. Her publisher wants her to write about younger characters and modern topics. Allie does not want to give up what made her successful.
“I’m grappling with it in real time,” Shields said about playing a character dealing with aging and relevance.
Shields knows these feelings well. She has been in Hollywood since she was a child. The role lets her make fun of her own experiences. Allie does not understand podcasting or social media. She says things like “the Zooms” and cannot use a tap-to-pay credit card. But she is smart and determined. She refuses to let anyone tell her she is past her prime.
Shields also serves as an executive producer on the show. This gives her creative control over how the character grows. Allie is not a perfect hero. She makes mistakes. She gets in the way of the police. She argues with Andi about small things. But she always wants to help her friends and find justice.
Amalia Williamson as Andrea Walker
Canadian actress Amalia Williamson plays Andrea “Andi” Walker. Andi is a young woman who once had a successful true-crime podcast. But she lost everything. Now she works at a bookstore. She is trying to rebuild her career. Andi is bold, confident, and knows a lot about forensic science. She uses the internet to find clues. She understands how social media can help solve cases.
Andi and Allie first meet at a book signing. Andi wants Allie to sign a book for her grandmother. Allie thinks Andi is just another fan. But then she remembers seeing Andi on television. Andi said that mystery novels like Allie’s are unrealistic and “escapist boomer fiction.” This makes Allie angry. The two women do not like each other at first.
But they have to work together. Andi snuck into the crime scene before the police arrived. She already found forensic evidence that proves Nash was murdered. Allie cannot ignore Andi’s skills. Slowly, they learn to respect each other. Andi helps Allie understand modern technology. Allie teaches Andi how to talk to people and get information without being rude.
Williamson’s past work includes roles in “Sullivan’s Crossing,” “Letterkenny,” and “Bria Mack Gets a Life.” This role is her biggest chance to reach a global audience.
Tom Cavanagh as Detective Jack Kerrigan
Tom Cavanagh, known for playing Harrison Wells in “The Flash,” joins the cast as Detective Jack Kerrigan. Jack is the new lead detective in Founders Cove. He moved from a big city to this small town. He does not know how to deal with the quirky locals.
Jack meets Allie at the crime scene. He finds her fingerprints in the victim’s study. He questions her like she is a suspect. Allie gets annoyed. She is used to people knowing who she is. But Jack does not read her books. He treats her like a regular person.
“I don’t want to really know. I’m not big on gore. I like getting just enough clues to make me feel smart, but not to really get it — at the end, I want to be like, ‘I didn’t know who did it.’”
The detective and the writer have a funny relationship. Jack wants Allie to stay out of his investigation. But she keeps finding clues before he does. Reviewers say there is a “will-they-won’t-they” feeling between Shields and Cavanagh’s characters. They might become more than just crime-solving partners as the season goes on.
