The British supermodel has been saying no to Hollywood for decades. But now, Kate Moss is finally letting the world see her story on the big screen. After rejecting countless offers to turn her life into a movie, Moss has signed on as an executive producer for Moss & Freud. The biopic focuses on her surprising friendship with famous painter Lucian Freud. The film is set to release in just a few days, giving fans a close look at a very personal part of her life.
Why This Biopic Is Different From Other Moss Projects
For years, movie studios and streaming services wanted to make a film about the supermodel. But Moss always said no. She did not want her life turned into entertainment. So what changed this time? The answer is the story itself.
Moss & Freud does not try to cover her whole career. Instead, it looks at one specific time. The year is 2002. Moss is 28 years old and pregnant with her daughter Lila. She agrees to sit nude for Lucian Freud, a British painter known for his raw and honest portraits. The painting sessions took place over nine months. They met three nights each week, often working from 7 PM until 2 AM.
โHe taught me discipline, because I could not be late. If I was five minutes late, he would kick off. But only once I was five minutes late, and he said, โAre you on drugs?!โ And I said, โNo, Iโm pregnant!โโ โ Kate Moss recalling her time with Lucian Freud.
The finished artwork, called Naked Portrait 2002, sold at a Christieโs auction in 2005 for ยฃ3.5 million. But for Moss, the experience was about more than money. She later called Freud the most interesting person she ever met.
Who Plays Kate Moss in the New Movie
Moss personally chose Ellie Bamber to play her on screen. Bamber is a British actor known for her work in Willow and The Serpent. Taking on this role was not easy for her.
At the London premiere, Bamber opened up about her fears. “It was really frightening,” she said. “I felt like I had a responsibility to do her justice. It was a challenge I was excited about. Anything that gives you fear is always a great thing to go and do.” She worked with a vocal coach to get Mossโs voice and laugh just right. She also studied the supermodelโs movements and how she walks on the catwalk.
Sir Derek Jacobi, an Oscar-nominated actor, plays Lucian Freud. The film is written and directed by James Lucas, who won an Academy Award for his short film The Phone Call.
Real Clothes From Kateโs Closet Appear in the Film
This biopic gets the fashion right because Moss helped directly. She lent many of her own iconic outfits to the production. The most famous piece is the Union Jack-printed jacket by John Galliano. Moss first wore it on a Paris runway in 1993. She wore it again for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. The jacket seen in the movie is the original from her personal archive.
Another important outfit is the navy sequined gown Moss wore to her 30th birthday party at Claridgeโs Hotel in 2004. The party had a theme based on F. Scott Fitzgeraldโs book The Beautiful and Damned. That dress originally belonged to Bond girl Britt Ekland, who bought it for a movie premiere in 1974.

The Movie Premieres Without Moss on the Red Carpet
Moss & Freud had its star-studded premiere at Londonโs Selfridges on May 25, 2026. But there was one surprising absence. Kate Moss did not walk the red carpet. She let Ellie Bamber take the spotlight instead. The premiere came after an earlier showing at the London Film Festival in October 2025, where reviews were mixed.
The film gives an honest look at Mossโs life during that time. It shows her dealing with fame, drugs, and a near-fatal car crash. Even with these heavy topics, Moss agreed to be an executive producer. She wanted the story told her way, without filters.
For fans in the UK, Moss & Freud arrives in theaters on May 29, 2026. The film will also show at select venues including Firstsite from June 9 to June 13, 2026. US and Canada release dates are expected to follow soon after. Australian and Indian release schedules have not been announced yet.
