The long wait for a new version of the classic 1981 sci-fi action movie Escape From New York is finally moving forward. Zack Snyder, known for movies like 300 and Man of Steel, has officially signed on to write and direct a reimagining of the John Carpenter cult favorite. The project aims for a theatrical release, with Carpenter himself serving as executive producer.
This marks the biggest update on the stalled remake in nearly 20 years. StudioCanal is backing the project alongside The Picture Company and Snyder’s own production company, Stone Quarry.
A Long Road Out of Development Hell
Hollywood has tried to remake Escape From New York since 2007. The journey saw many famous directors come and go. At different times, Len Wiseman (Underworld) , Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) , and Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Till Dawn) were all attached to direct. Actor Gerard Butler was once in talks to play the lead role, Snake Plissken. More recently, the team behind the new Scream movies, Radio Silence, tried to develop a “requel” in 2022.
None of those attempts made it to the big screen. With Snyder now attached, the project has gained serious momentum. The team plans to take the package to studios and streamers in the coming weeks, with a strong push for a traditional theatrical release.
What We Know About Snyder’s Vision
While the plot is still a secret, sources say Snyder wants to make a “down and dirty” action movie. He plans to use practical effects and real locations instead of relying on green screens. This approach would be similar to his first big hit, the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake, rather than his more recent superhero epics.
The original film is set in a dystopian 1997. Manhattan has been turned into a maximum-security prison. When the U.S. President crash-lands inside, the government forces the criminal Snake Plissken to rescue him. The prisoner has 24 hours to succeed, or a bomb planted in his neck will explode.
The Big Question: Who Will Play Snake Plissken?
The biggest challenge for the Escape From New York remake is finding the right actor to fill the shoes of Kurt Russell. Russell’s performance as the eye-patch-wearing anti-hero turned him from a Disney star into a legendary action icon.
Russell has not been announced to return. The studio now faces the difficult task of recasting a character that many fans consider impossible to replace. In the past, names like Tom Hardy, Jon Bernthal, and even Russell’s son Wyatt Russell were suggested for the role. However, no casting news has been released yet.
The original film’s legacy lives on. It famously inspired the look and personality of the video game character Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series.
John Carpenter’s Involvement
The original director, John Carpenter, is not just sitting by. He is actively involved as an executive producer on the project. Carpenter’s support is a major win for the production, as he has been hesitant about remakes in the past. He directed the 1981 film and co-wrote it with Nick Castle.
Carpenter also directed the 1996 sequel, Escape From L.A., which saw Russell return to the role. Having the master of horror and sci-fi on board gives the project a strong seal of approval.
When Will the Movie Release?
Fans will have to wait a bit longer. Snyder is currently finishing his next project, The Last Photograph, a drama starring himself as a war photographer. That film is in post-production and is scheduled for a 2027 release. It is likely that Escape From New York will begin production after he completes that movie.
