The Prime Video series Every Year After dropped all eight episodes on June 10, 2026 . The show is based on Carley Fortune’s best-selling book “Every Summer After.” It follows Percy (Sadie Soverall) and Sam (Matt Cornett) as they go from childhood friends to lovers, break up, and meet again ten years later. But the season finale ends with a big shock involving Sam’s older brother Charlie (Michael Bradway). A single photograph on the wall might hold the answer to what happens next.

The Finale’s Shocking Cliffhanger for Charlie

In the last episode called “Goodbye…,” Charlie visits his boss’s office. On the wall, he sees a framed photo of himself, Sam, and Percy riding on a yellow banana boat during a happy summer in Barry’s Bay. The sight stops him cold. He asks his boss who took the picture, but the boss only says his wife bought it from a gallery years ago.

Later that night, Charlie goes back to the office alone. He stares at the photo again. Then he starts showing signs of a heart attack. He grabs his chest, has trouble breathing, and falls to the floor. The episode ends with Charlie unconscious.

Charlie’s father died from a sudden heart attack. Sam became a cardiologist because of that loss. Actor Michael Bradway confirmed to Deadline that Charlie also has heart problems. “It was a heart attack. We’re gonna let Percy have the panic attacks. Charlie gets the heart attack,” Bradway said.

The Photograph That Book Readers Recognized

For viewers who have not read Carley Fortune’s second book, the photo might seem like just a sad memory. But fans of the books know this picture means something much bigger. The photograph was taken by a character named Alice Everly. She is the main love interest in Fortune’s 2025 novel One Golden Summer.

In One Golden Summer, Alice returns to Barry’s Bay to help her grandmother heal from hip surgery. She reconnects with Charlie, the boy she briefly met and photographed years earlier. Their romance becomes the center of the story. The photo of Charlie, Sam, and Percy on the banana boat is the very picture Alice took during that first visit.

What the Clue Means for a Potential Season 2

Prime Video has not yet renewed Every Year After for a second season . But showrunner Amy B. Harris already has plans. She told Entertainment Weekly that she sees the show lasting for five seasons. “Obviously, there’s another book that’s connected to Barry’s Bay that I think will be a very exciting blueprint for us for a potential season 2,” Harris said.

The photograph Easter Egg was a deliberate choice. Harris wanted to hint at Alice’s existence without actually casting the character yet. In an interview with Deadline, she explained: “We finally realized we had the most perfect way to bring her in without having to bring her in, which is that photograph.”

The photo also serves as a reminder for Charlie of the happy life he lost. He pushed away his brother Sam after Percy confessed that she slept with Charlie ten years ago. Now Charlie lives a lonely, work-focused life in the city. “He lost his brother, he lost that community in Barry’s Bay. There’s this sadness and a heartbrokenness to where he is,” Harris told Deadline. “It felt so perfect that Alice’s photo would be the thing that reminded him of the world he loved and has lost.”

Charlie’s Fate and a Possible Redemption Story

Book readers know that Charlie does not die. In One Golden Summer, he has a serious heart condition that requires surgery. But he survives and finds love with Alice. The show seems to be setting up the same path. Michael Bradway confirmed that he read One Golden Summer and knew the cliffhanger was coming. He even added small hints in earlier episodes to tease book fans.

If the show gets a second season, Charlie’s redemption arc will likely be a major part. He will need to fix his relationship with Sam and Percy. At the same time, Alice will enter the picture. The photograph that caused his heart attack might become the very thing that brings him happiness.

Harris told Deadline about Charlie’s journey: “He has a broken heart. It’s now physically breaking down, but he’s also lost everything that matters to him.” The photo of the banana boat could be the key that turns his life around.

For now, fans will have to wait for an official renewal announcement from Prime Video. If the show gets a second season, it would likely not arrive until 2027. All eight episodes of Every Year After Season 1 are streaming now on Prime Video in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India and other regions.
