House of the Dragon returns for its third season on June 21, 2026, and the cast is making one thing clear: the talking is done, and the real war has begun.
After two seasons of building tension, political games, and family betrayal, the Dance of the Dragons is now a full-blown civil war in House of the Dragon Season 3. The actors behind the Targaryen family are giving fans a clear picture of what to expect when the show returns. Expect bigger battles, darker choices, and a level of violence that makes the previous seasons feel like a warm-up.
Emma D’Arcy Says Rhaenyra Finally Stops Waiting and Starts Fighting
For two seasons, Rhaenyra Targaryen held back. She tried diplomacy. She sought justice for her son’s death. She waited for the realm to honor her father’s wish. According to actor Emma D’Arcy, that version of Rhaenyra is gone.
“There is a feeling that the position she finds herself in is fated in some way… [It’s a] character who has been kind of restrained from action for two seasons [who is] finally on the precipice of seizing her end.”
D’Arcy explained to The Hollywood Reporter that House Of The Dragon Season 3 finally gives Rhaenyra momentum. Instead of reacting to the Greens’ moves, she is now driving the conflict forward. The goal is straightforward: take back the Iron Throne and eliminate Aegon II in public to end any debate about who the true ruler is.
In a separate interview, D’Arcy opened up about the emotional toll on the character. As the war intensifies, Rhaenyra faces constant attacks on her ability to lead simply because she is a woman.
“Something Rhaenyra has to reckon with is trying to right the campaign of othering. She comes in as a ruling queen, and she has to find a way to declare to her male colleagues and counsel, as well as her subjects, that ‘I am the same as you. I have the same capacity to lead the realm as you’.”
The show is also moving Rhaenyra closer to her book counterpart from Fire & Blood. Showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed that the character will take a darker turn, moving toward tyranny as she becomes more radicalized by the prophecy of “A Song of Ice and Fire.”
Matt Smith Brings ‘Football Hooligan’ Energy to Daemon’s Violence
Matt Smith returns as the unpredictable Daemon Targaryen, and his co-star has a unique way of describing his performance. Emma D’Arcy called Smith’s approach to violence surprisingly charming.
“There was a scene we did this season, and I got to watch Matt, who is an amazing physical performer, do some violence. The way Matt approaches it is allowing Daemon to be like a football hooligan. It is a much more poised presentation of violence.”
Smith himself described the new season in simple terms. He told The Hollywood Reporter that Season 3 is a major step up in scale and bloodshed.
“I think they’ve aimed for scale, blood. It’s a big bloodbath, really, this season, which is absolutely where it’s needed to go. I think that’s when the show is actually operating at its best in many ways — particularly for Daemon.”
Smith also shared that the cast makes these shows for the audience. He hopes the action and drama deliver on the expectations fans have built up over the long wait between seasons.
Battle of the Gullet Sets a Stunt Record
House Of The Dragon Season 3 opens with the Battle of the Gullet, a massive naval battle that fans of the books have been waiting to see. The production team went to extreme lengths to bring it to life.
Ryan Condal said the sequence is unlike anything attempted on television before. The numbers back up that claim. For the opening episode alone, the production:
- Used 15,000 stunt crowd participants
- Built 3,500 props
- Burned through 25 tons of propane
- Set 23 stunt performers on fire simultaneously in one take, setting a world record.
The crew built full-scale ships, including Corlys Velaryon’s “The Queen That Never Was,” and placed them on massive gimbals in water tanks to simulate real ocean battles. Steve Toussaint, who plays Corlys, described the difficult filming conditions. The decks were slippery with water and fake blood, and the heavy armor made the complex fight moves they practiced in the gym nearly impossible to perform on set.
Abigail Thorn, who plays Admiral Sharako Lohar, shared that she gained 10-15 kilograms (22-33 pounds) of muscle between seasons to prepare for the physical demands of the role, training with stunt coordinators who had worked on Marvel movies.
What the Cast Says About Their Characters’ Journeys
Steve Toussaint explained where Lord Corlys Velaryon finds himself at the start of House Of The Dragon Season 3. The Sea Snake is still grieving the death of his wife, Rhaenys, and struggling to connect with his illegitimate son, Alyn of Hull, who wants nothing to do with him.
Harry Collett, who plays Prince Jacaerys, admitted his character is acting like a frustrated teenager. Jace believes his mother is making mistakes, but he is still young and inexperienced.
Abubakar Salim, who plays Alyn, said viewers will see his character mature rather than soften. House Of The Dragon Season 3 starts with Alyn still angry and raw from the events of Season 2.
Abigail Thorn revealed she looked to Moby-Dick for inspiration. Her character, Sharako Lohar, becomes obsessed with bringing down Corlys Velaryon, treating him like her personal white whale.
Ryan Condal Explains the Shift from Politics to Pure War
The showrunner made it clear that House Of The Dragon Season 3 is intentionally relentless. The careful political maneuvering of the first two seasons is over. Condal told the audience at SXSW London that the story now moves at full speed and never stops.
“The season does have a feeling of relentlessness to it. The events set in motion at the end of Season 2 do flip the boulder that starts to roll down the hill, and there is the sense of inexorability.”
Condal compared the Battle of the Gullet to Helm’s Deep from The Lord of the Rings. He said they could not simply mention a major historical battle. They had to show it. Even within the brutal history of the Dance of the Dragons, the Gullet stands out as one of the worst events.
House Of The Dragon Season 3 is the biggest season the show has made by a wide margin. More shoot days, more locations, and more construction went into these eight episodes than any previous chapter of the series.
