Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day, the first film adaptation of the author’s 1919 novel, has arrived with a solid 80% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie, which opened the SXSW London film festival on June 1, 2026, before its theatrical release in the United Kingdom on June 19, is drawing praise for its accessible take on a polarizing literary work.
The film follows Katharine Hilbery (Haley Bennett), a young astronomer in Edwardian London who fights against her family’s expectations and the patriarchal society of 1910 to pursue her passion for science. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the suffragette movement and a period of rapid technological and scientific change, providing a vibrant setting for this unromantic comedy.
Critics Praise Accessible Adaptation and Lead Performance
Many critics are charmed by director Tina Gharavi’s ability to transform Virginia Woolf’s dense source material into an entertaining and accessible period drama. Reviewers frequently single out Haley Bennett’s performance as the independent Katharine, calling it “captivating” and praising her ability to balance vulnerability with strength. Others highlight the movie’s warmth, quirky energy, high production values, and themes of female empowerment.
The film’s star-studded cast includes Timothy Spall, Jennifer Saunders, Jack Whitehall, Lily Allen, Sally Phillips, and Elyas M’Barek. Allen, who plays suffragette Mary Datchet, delivers what some consider an “anachronistic performance” that brings a deliberate 21st-century energy to the Edwardian setting. The film also features a modern synth-heavy score, which some critics find refreshing while others see it as distracting.
Mixed Reviews for Some Critics
Not every review is glowing. Some critics argue that the adaptation simplifies Woolf’s complex writing too much, turning her layered novel into a more conventional heritage drama. Others feel the film’s feminist message lacks depth and that the attempts to modernize the source material produce mixed results.
A review from Little White Lies described the film as “a muddled adaptation that struggles to toe the line between authenticity and anachronism,” giving it a 3 out of 5 rating. The critic noted that while the film has good intentions, it leaves its most intriguing ideas underexplored. The Edinburgh Reporter gave the movie a 2-star review, noting that while the cast is capable, the film often feels “unfinished or unpolished.”
