James Gunn and Peter Safran have met with David Ellison, the chairman and CEO of Paramount Skydance, about the future of the DC Universe. The meeting happened as Ellison prepares to take over Warner Bros. Discovery through a $111 billion merger. This news has reassured fans who worried that the DCU might face another shakeup.
The meeting was confirmed by Lars P. Winther, an executive producer on the upcoming Supergirl film. Winther spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at the movie’s premiere. He said Ellison visited the studio’s production hub in Atlanta, where Man of Tomorrow is currently being filmed.
“He came to Trilith [Studios] already. That’s where we shoot all our movies that James directs. He came to Atlanta, we showed him everything, and we’re having discussions with him.”
Paramount CEO Shows Support for the DCU Slate
Winther described the meeting as positive. He said Ellison is “pretty open to what we’re doing” regarding the DCU’s existing plans. The producer also mentioned that Ellison is a “big fan” of the work being done and has been “giving us kind of what we want.”
This support is important because the DCU has gone through many changes over the years. The franchise has had several different creative teams and directions since the DCEU era. The new leadership could have decided to start over again. Instead, the current slate of movies and shows appears to be safe.
Winther pointed out that many projects are already too far along to stop. “We do have a slate and a lot of it — obviously, Clayface is already coming out. We already have the Lanterns TV show. On those things, the train’s left the station. So we’re good,” he said.
DCU Production Continues at Full Speed
Work on the DCU is moving quickly. Winther revealed that Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to last summer’s Superman, is already halfway through filming. The production is moving at a fast pace.
The Supergirl film, which stars Milly Alcock, has already been shot in London and will be released on June 26, 2026. Clayface was also shot in London, and production on The Batman 2 started about a week and a half ago.
The DCU plan, which Gunn and Safran announced in 2023, includes at least 10 projects. These are part of a “Gods and Monsters” construct that mixes live-action and animation. The goal is to create a connected universe where characters appear in each other’s films.
Winther explained that Supergirl will have a major role in Man of Tomorrow. “We’ve created a Superman family so, obviously, she’s in that movie. So you’re seeing them, now, gathered as a team,” he said. The plan is to build up the “Superman family” and include more characters from the comics.

The Merger and What It Means for DC
The Paramount-Warner Bros. merger has already received approval from the U.S. Justice Department. However, the deal is still being reviewed by the state of California. If the merger goes through, Paramount will gain control of several major assets. These include CNN, HBO, and DC Studios.
Before this confirmation, there were rumors that Ellison might want to remove Gunn and Safran from their roles. Some reports suggested that Paramount might want more control over which directors make DC movies. However, the current update shows a different picture.
Winther’s statements suggest that Ellison will likely keep the current leadership in place. He said Ellison is “giving us kind of what we want” and has been “great with us.” This is a change from earlier reports that suggested a possible shakeup.
However, some caution is still warranted. The projects that are currently considered “safe” were all approved by the previous Warner Bros. management. It is common for new owners to keep productions that are already filming because canceling them would be very expensive. The real test will come after 2027. At that point, Ellison and his team will decide what comes next for the DCU.
