The legal trouble around Thalapathy Vijay’s final movie ‘Jana Nayagan’ just got more serious. The Madras High Court has refused bail to two men arrested in the piracy case. The court’s decision came after police revealed that a huge number of peopleโ1.2 crore (12 million)โhad already watched the film illegally online, even before it was certified for release.
Court Rejects Bail Pleas in Piracy Case
On July 2, Justice C. Kumarappan heard the bail petitions of S. Rajini (the fourth accused) and Jayaprakash (the eleventh accused). The judge dismissed their requests after the prosecution presented strong evidence about the scale of the leak.
The police told the court that the pirated copy of Jana Nayagan first appeared online on April 9. At that time, the movie had not yet received its certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The prosecution argued that the leak was not an accident but a planned operation.
Police Reveal How the Film Was Stolen
The investigation found that a freelance film editor was the main person behind the theft. According to police, he copied the movie’s footage from an editing studio onto a hard drive. He then worked with his two brothers to put the clips together into a full film.
The prosecution alleged that the prime accused, a freelance film editor, copied the movie files from an editing studio onto a hard drive. The footage was later compiled into a complete film and uploaded to Google Drive, from where it spread to piracy platforms.
Once the complete film was ready, the group uploaded it to Google Drive. From there, it quickly spread to well-known piracy websites like Tamil Rockers. This allowed millions of people to watch the uncertified version of the movie before anyone could stop it.
Why the Court Refused Bail
The prosecution gave several strong reasons for not granting bail. First, the investigation is still active. Two of the 21 people accused in the case are still on the run. The police believe finding them is very important to uncover the money trail behind the piracy network.
Second, the police have only filed a preliminary charge sheet so far. The full investigation is not complete. The court agreed with the prosecution’s argument that releasing the two accused could lead to evidence being destroyed or witnesses being pressured.
Justice Kumarappan noted the seriousness of the allegations. The fact that the leaked version was an uncertified print made the crime even more severe in the eyes of the court.
Film Producers Took Legal Action
The movie’s producer, KVN Productions, did not stay quiet during this crisis. They approached the Madras High Court and got an interim order. The order directed internet service providers to block websites and platforms that were sharing the film illegally.
The government also told the court that KVN Productions had obtained an interim injunction from the Madras High Court directing internet service providers to block the unauthorised exhibition of the film.
Despite these efforts, the damage was already done. The police estimate that around 1.2 crore viewers had already seen the pirated version before the links were finally taken down.
The Film and Its Delayed Release
Jana Nayagan is being called Vijay’s final film. The actor and politician is stepping away from cinema to focus on his career in politics. Directed by H. Vinoth, the movie stars Bobby Deol as the main villain and Pooja Hegde as the female lead. The cast also includes Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain in important roles.
The film was originally scheduled to release on January 9, 2026. However, the release was delayed due to problems with the CBFC. The movie is still waiting for its final certification, and the makers have not yet announced a new release date.
CBFC Denies Leak Rumors
As the controversy grew, there were rumors that the leak might have come from the CBFC’s office. The certification board quickly denied these claims. The board called such reports “baseless and misleading” and said its certification process is protected through a secure Key Delivery Message system.
The Jana Nayagan piracy case highlights the huge problem of film leaks in India. It also shows how fast pirated content can spread online, causing major losses for filmmakers and production houses. The investigation continues as police work to arrest the remaining suspects and track the financial network behind this illegal operation.
