Meta recently announced that it will give away 15,000 Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to Vision Ireland, the country’s national sight loss charity. The glasses will be distributed for free to blind and visually impaired adults across Ireland. While the move aims to make daily life easier for people with vision problems, it has also raised questions about privacy and the company’s true intentions.
The donation is large enough to cover every blind and visually impaired adult that Vision Ireland currently supports. Eligible people can now register their interest through the charity’s website or by phone. Meta will also pay for training sessions to help recipients learn how to use the glasses properly.
How the AI Glasses Help Visually Impaired People
The Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses come with built-in cameras and Meta’s artificial intelligence technology. These features allow users to perform many tasks that would otherwise be difficult or impossible for someone with vision loss.
The glasses can read printed text aloud, identify objects in the user’s surroundings, and describe the environment through voice prompts. Users can also read and respond to messages without using their hands, make phone calls, perform live translations, and play music.
Meta has also connected the glasses to the Be My Eyes network. This service lets users connect with volunteers who can help with daily activities like identifying shopping items, selecting clothing, and navigating unfamiliar places.

“What I really like about the glasses is the speed at which I get the information I need – instead of waiting for someone to read a letter or waiting for someone to tell me what I have in the fridge, I’ll just do it on impulse. Now I’m doing things for myself independently, that maybe before I wouldn’t have done.”

Eligible individuals who are blind or have low vision can register their interest online through Vision Ireland’s dedicated website at meta.vi.ie. They can also call the dedicated phone number: +353 1 882 1910.
Vision Ireland will manage a phased roll-out process. This includes application, assessment, eligibility checks, selection, in-person training, and ongoing support. The charity will host events across Ireland where people can receive their glasses, get hands-on guidance from trained staff, and connect with other participants.
A dedicated helpdesk will also be available to support recipients with follow-up questions after their training.

Reports that third-party services can disable the recording indicator light have made the situation worse. There have also been reports that Meta has looked into adding facial recognition features to the devices.
