A new rumor suggesting Deadpool could become the new face of Marvel’s famous cameo tradition has sparked a fierce debate online. Fans are split between those who think the idea makes sense and those who feel it would be disrespectful to the legacy of Stan Lee.
How the Deadpool Cameo Rumor Started
Talk of Deadpool stepping into Stan Lee‘s shoes began circulating after LADbible shared a post on Instagram. The post suggested that the Merc with a Mouth might carry on the tradition of appearing in Marvel films as a recurring background character.
These are fan rumors only. Marvel Studios has not confirmed anything, and no official announcement has been made about any character taking over the cameo tradition.
The discussion gained traction because Stan Lee appeared in Marvel projects for decades, from The Trial of the Incredible Hulk in 1989 all the way to Avengers: Endgame in 2019. His appearances became a beloved ritual for moviegoers around the world.
Stan Lee Built a Cameo Legacy Like No Other
Stan Lee co-created iconic characters including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, and Black Panther. His first Marvel movie cameo was in Iron Man in 2008, which launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
From that point, he appeared in nearly every MCU film. Fans learned to scan the background of every scene, waiting to spot him. He played a FedEx delivery man in Captain America: Civil War, a casino patron in Black Panther, and a barber in Thor: Ragnarok.
Lee passed away in November 2018 at the age of 95. Before his death, he recorded several cameos in advance so they could be used in future films. His final appearance came in Avengers: Endgame.

That comment touches on a real concern. An AI company called ElevenLabs announced in May 2026 a deal with Stan Lee Universe to replicate Lee’s voice and likeness. The company plans to use the AI version for audiobooks, comic panels, and a book club series. Many fans find this unsettling, especially given reports that Lee was allegedly a victim of elder abuse in his final years.
Another user (@n.a.h.s.h.o.n) offered a creative take:
“Ngl this is actually the most feasible and logical thing to do, cuz he anyways breaks the fourth wall. Instead of his regular red costume he should make cameos in the movies without his costume so nobody knows who he is”

The article noted that having Deadpool show up in a Stan Lee disguise would pull viewers out of the film’s carefully crafted world. A masked character in a gray wig and sunglasses could never blend into the background the way Lee did.

Deadpool’s Future in the Marvel Universe
Deadpool is already set to appear in future Marvel projects. Ryan Reynolds is confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday. Reports in January 2026 suggested that a fourth Deadpool solo movie may be at the top of Reynolds’ priority list.
The character’s ability to break the fourth wall has already helped him move from the Fox X-Men universe into the MCU. He made jokes about the transition in Deadpool & Wolverine, which became a massive box office success in 2024.
Shawn Levy, who directed Deadpool & Wolverine, revealed that Stan Lee almost had a cameo in that film. During an appearance on Jake’s Takes on YouTube, Levy said Lee would have played one of the potential customers in a scene. The cameo never happened because Lee passed away before production.
