Will Smith recently shared a fascinating and humorous account of his experiences with the late music producer Quincy Jones during the creation of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song. The revelation came as part of VICE’s docuseries Black Comedy in America, offering insights into the development of the iconic track and Smith’s initial collaboration with the legendary composer.
Quincy’s Honest Reaction
Will Smith recounted how Quincy Jones was instrumental in shaping the theme song that later became a defining element of the popular 1990s sitcom. Smith explained that the version of the song loved by millions today wasn’t the initial concept. Quincy Jones, known for his impeccable musical standards and collaborations with stars like Michael Jackson, didn’t hesitate to express his dissatisfaction with the first draft of the track.
Smith revealed, “Quincy presented a theme song.” However, Smith wasn’t impressed, admitting he found the original version unsatisfactory. In Jones’s candid words, he also dismissed his version, calling it “a piece of s—.”
To address the issue, Smith collaborated with his longtime friend and partner DJ Jazzy Jeff. Together, they revamped the theme song and presented the new version to Jones, who finally approved, acknowledging that it was exactly “what it needs to be.”
First Meeting with Quincy Jones
Smith and Jones first crossed paths in 1989 when Smith pitched the idea for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Jones, already a legendary producer and composer, immediately recognized Smith’s potential. Smith recalled Jones’s humorous reaction upon hearing his rap name for the first time:
“[Jones] said, ‘Hey, man, I saw your music videos. I love you for what you’re doing. Tell me what your rap name was again?’”
When Smith responded with “Fresh Prince,” Jones responded with enthusiasm, saying, “All right, good, that’s what we’ll call the show.”
In a pivotal moment, Jones handed Smith a script and asked him to audition on the spot. Smith’s performance was successful, and he secured his role in the now-iconic series.
Reflecting on Quincy’s Legacy
Quincy Jones, who passed away earlier this November at the age of 91, left an indelible mark on the entertainment world. Smith paid tribute to the late producer, describing him as a mentor, a father figure, and a friend.
Smith shared an emotional note, saying:
“Quincy Jones is the true definition of a mentor, a father, and a friend. He pointed me toward the greatest parts of myself. He defended me. He nurtured me. He encouraged me. He inspired me. He checked me when he needed to.”
Jones is survived by his seven children and an enduring legacy that includes groundbreaking work across music, television, and film.
