The massive animated hit KPop Demon Hunters is officially getting a sequel. KPop Demon Hunters 2 is in development, with Netflix and Sony finalizing a deal for its release. Fans will need to be patient, as the film is not expected to arrive until 2029.

The Official Sequel Confirmation

Netflix and Sony have officially closed deals to bring back the demon-hunting K-pop group Huntr/x for a second movie. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are set to return to lead the project. While talent agreements are still being finalized, the core creative team is locked in for the sequel.

The film will follow the continued adventures of the fictional K-pop girl group Huntr/x, whose members Rumi, Mira, and Zoey live a double life fighting supernatural threats. The first movie became a global phenomenon upon its release in June 2025, breaking records for Netflix.

A Longer-Than-Expected Wait

The reported 2029 release window means a four-year gap between the first movie and its sequel. This timeline is standard for major animated films, which require significant development time. The multi-year gap between popular animated sequels like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse serves as a recent example.

The film’s directors have previously expressed their interest in continuing the story. In a July interview, co-director Maggie Kang indicated that the first film left many possibilities open for future stories.

“Weโ€™ve set up so much for potential backstory,” Kang told Variety. “Obviously, thereโ€™s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored. We had to do that because thereโ€™s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes.”

The Unprecedented Success of the First Film

KPop Demon Hunters became Netflix’s most-watched movie ever, amassing over 325 million views worldwide. It dethroned previous record-holders like Red Notice and established itself as a major pop culture event in 2025.

The movie’s success extended beyond streaming. A sing-along version was released in theaters, topping the box office during its August debut weekend with an estimated $18 million. A second theatrical run around Halloween also performed well. The film’s soundtrack achieved major commercial success, topping the Billboard 200 albums chart and producing the number-one hit single “Golden.”

The fictional group Huntr/x, performed by singers EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, has remained in the public eye with performances on Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Their upcoming performance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was announced recently.
