Silent Night, Deadly Night movie is here, and fans are spotting big similarities to two other popular stories. The remake brings back the killer Santa but gives him a fresh look. Many people watching the trailer say the film feels like it mixes the character from Halloween Ends with the rules from Dexter. The movie opens in theaters on today (December 12, 2025).

A New Look for a Classic Killer

The original Silent Night, Deadly Night from 1984 is a cult classic. It tells the story of Billy Chapman, a boy who sees his parents killed by a man in a Santa suit on Christmas Eve. Later, as a young man working in a toy store, he is forced to dress as Santa, which causes him to snap and go on a violent rampage. The film was very controversial when it first came out, with some groups protesting it for showing Santa as a killer.

This new version is a remake directed by Mike P. Nelson. It keeps the core idea but makes some key changes. This Billy, played by Rohan Campbell, is described as more of a drifter who comes to a small town. The trailer shows he still uses classic weapons like an axe and Christmas lights, but with new twists.

โ€œBilly is both the protagonist and antagonist of the filmsโ€ฆ In this remake, he assumes a vigilante persona.โ€

The Clear Halloween Ends Connection

One of the biggest talking points is the casting of Rohan Campbell. Campbell is best known to horror fans for playing Corey Cunningham in the 2022 film Halloween Ends. In that movie, Corey was a young man traumatized by a tragic accident who is bullied by his town and eventually becomes a new vessel for evil.

Fans and reviewers see a direct line between Campbell’s two roles. Both Corey and Billy are young men damaged by severe childhood trauma. Both characters are also shunned by their communities, which pushes them further toward violence. The trailer suggests this version of Billy might also be influenced by a supernatural force, similar to how Michael Myers passed his evil to Corey.

Borrowing the “Dexter” Code

The other major influence people see is from the TV series Dexter. In Dexter, the main character is a serial killer who only murders other killers, following a strict moral code taught by his adoptive father. This makes the audience sometimes root for him, even though he is a murderer.

This new Silent Night, Deadly Night seems to borrow that idea. In the film, Billy doesn’t kill randomly. He is guided by an inner voice to target people he decides have been “naughty”. This makes him more of a vigilante, like Dexter, and might make viewers sympathize with him in a way they wouldn’t with a typical slasher villain.

Can It Be a True Horror Film?

This shift is causing some debate. Traditional slasher movies work because the killer is scary and the audience fears for the victims. If Billy is presented as a hero who punishes bad people, some of that classic horror tension might be lost. Early reactions note that the film’s violence has a more cartoonish, fun tone in places, which is different from the grim original.

The movie also includes a love story between Billy and a local woman named Pam, played by Ruby Modine. This focus on connection and romance is another element it shares with Halloween Ends, which also centered on a relationship between two damaged people.

A Fresh Take or Too Familiar?

The big question is whether this remake brings something new to the table. The 1984 film was shocking because of its direct link between Christmas cheer and brutal violence. By adding ideas from modern hits like Dexter and Halloween Ends, the new film is certainly trying a different approach.

Some fans of the original may miss its raw, controversial edge. Others might enjoy the fresh blend of a vigilante story set against a holiday backdrop. The trailer promises plenty of creative, Christmas-themed kills, from antler impalements to chainsaw attacks.

The film will be released by Cineverse, the same studio behind the popular Terrifier horror films. Silent Night, Deadly Night arrives in theaters today, December 12, 2025.
