The creator of the hit HBO Max drama Heated Rivalry has confirmed that while the story will evolve, the intimate relationship between its central characters will remain the show’s focus as it moves into its second season.
As the first season concluded with a romantic finale at Shane Hollander’s cottage, showrunner Jacob Tierney revealed his plans for the future. He stated that the journey of the show, regardless of how long it continues, “will always be centered around the relationship between Shane and Ilya.” He directly addressed the role of their physical connection, noting, “Sex will always be a big part of it, like it is with any romantic relationship.”
The first season, which premiered in November 2025 and was swiftly renewed in December, has become a global sensation for its unapologetic portrayal of a gay romance between two professional hockey players.
What the Season 1 Finale Revealed About Their Relationship
The Season 1 finale, titled “The Cottage,” served as a pivotal turning point for characters Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie). After years of a secret sexual relationship built on rivalry, the episode forced them into two weeks of isolated honesty at Shane’s remote property.
This setting allowed their relationship to progress emotionally in ways it never could during their fleeting hotel meetups. The episode culminated in long-withheld declarations of love and a significant step forward: coming out to Shane’s parents. A new scene not found in the original book featured a private moment between Shane and his mother, Yuna (Christina Chang), where she assured him he had nothing to apologize for.
Tierney explained that the season ended with Shane and Ilya driving into the sunset, a deliberate choice to leave viewers with “the warm, fuzzy feeling of them getting to be happy together,” rather than including more plot-focused exposition from the book.
How Sex Scenes Function as Storytelling
From the beginning, Tierney’s approach to the show’s intimate scenes was intentional. He has been vocal about wanting to move away from traumatic depictions of queer sex and instead portray it as a natural, joyful, and communicative part of a relationship.
“We were very aware we’re making a horny show. Let it be horny. Enjoy!” Tierney told Entertainment Weekly. “Sex is not supposed to be trauma here.”
This philosophy guided the first season, where the nature of the sex scenes evolved alongside the characters’ feelings. Tierney highlighted the finale’s intimate moments as his favorite because they blended sweetness, playfulness, and humor, signaling a new stage in Shane and Ilya’s partnership.
The production employed an intimacy coordinator, Chala Hunter, to choreograph these scenes with specificity and ensure actor comfort. Hunter noted that the explicit nature of the scenes was crucial because “the sex is such a big part of the emotional, physical, and psychological journey that these characters go through.”
What to Expect in Season 2
While the core of Season 2 will remain Shane and Ilya’s love story, the narrative is expected to adapt elements from Rachel Reid’s 2022 sequel novel, The Long Game. This book continues their story a few years later, exploring the increasing strain of maintaining a secret relationship while navigating professional hockey careers.
Tierney has indicated that the sex in the next season will “function differently,” reflecting the new challenges in a more established relationship. He emphasized that the show will tackle adult questions about sustaining love after the initial confession.
“It’s really about continuing that progress of what happens after that first blush of love, what happens after you decide you’re in love and how do you sustain it?” Tierney said. “We love each other, and now what? Does that mean everything’s easy? No, it does not.”
Fans eager for a quick return will have to be patient. Tierney has confirmed that Season 2 will not be released in late 2026, as the writing process is just beginning. He stated the goal is to balance quality with timeliness, acknowledging the desire to avoid a long wait between seasons while ensuring the next installment is not rushed.

A Confident Future for a Breakout Hit
The confidence in continuing Shane and Ilya’s story stems from the show’s meteoric success. Jacob Tierney, who also serves as writer and director, initially doubted the explicit romance novels could be adapted. He ultimately pursued the project by messaging author Rachel Reid on Instagram, securing the rights to her “Game Changers” book series.
The gamble paid off, with the show resonating powerfully with LGBTQ and female audiences and breaking viewership records for Canadian streamer Crave. As Tierney looks ahead, his focus remains on the characters that started it all, promising that their evolving relationshipโin all its dimensionsโwill stay at the heart of Heated Rivalry.
