The latest season of the hit Netflix series Bridgerton has finally arrived, and it belongs to Benedict Bridgerton. The show’s fourth season, split into two parts, launched on January 29, 2026, with a premiere episode centered on a lavish masquerade ball. This is where Benedict’s long-awaited love story, based on Julia Quinn’s novel An Offer from a Gentleman, begins to unfold. The episode, titled “The Waltz,” masterfully sets the stage for a Cinderella-inspired romance while exploring Benedict’s personal struggles and the wider social world of the ton.

Setting the Stage for a New Social Season

The season opens not with the glittering upper class, but with a quiet look at the working life “downstairs” at Bridgerton House. This shift in perspective is key for Season 4, which promises to focus more on the lives of servants, a world where our new leading lady, Sophie Baek, exists. As the staff prepares for the return of Eloise, Francesca, and John from Scotland, we get quick updates on the family: Kate and Anthony are in India with their new baby, Gregory is at Eton, and Hyacinth is eager to debut.

Violet Bridgerton’s main concern, however, is her second son, Benedict. She finds him in a rather scandalous situation, waking up naked in bed with not one, but two women. Frustrated, Violet reminds him of his duties to the family and his sisters’ prospects, demanding his presence at the masquerade ball she is hosting. Benedict resists, expressing a deep-seated feeling of not being enough.

Luke Thompson, who plays Benedict, has described the first episode as “incredibly romantic,” playing into the beautiful “love-at-first-sight trope”.

Benedict Bridgerton’s Internal Struggle

Before the ball, Benedict escapes to one of his artistic gatherings, arriving fashionably late to his mother’s event. His tardiness is a small rebellion against the role society has carved out for him. In a heartfelt moment with Violet earlier, Benedict pleaded for his current, unconventional self to be “enough,” revealing his desperation to be seen as more than just “Number Two,” the spare heir.

His journey to the art scene is a search for a place where he is valued for his true self, not his title or family name. This internal conflict makes him uniquely open to a connection that exists outside the strict rules of high society, setting the stage for his encounter with the mysterious Lady in Silver.

The Grand Masquerade Ball and Its Players

The ball itself is a spectacular set piece, with elaborate costumes and hidden agendas. Key members of the ton use the anonymity of masks to pursue their own interests. Queen Charlotte arrives in a defiant mood, refusing to wear a mask at all. She is eager for fresh gossip and sets her sights on creating drama, ultimately focusing on Benedict as a prime target for matchmaking.

Meanwhile, Lady Danbury stuns the Queen by revealing she is considering stepping back from society, a move Charlotte strongly opposes. Penelope Featherington, now publicly known as Lady Whistledown, navigates a new dynamic with the Queen, who demands early previews of her scandal sheet. Eloise, for her part, announces she has decided to become a spinster and take herself “off the shelf,” much to Penelope’s surprise.

The Meet-Cute: Benedict and the Lady in Silver

Amidst this swirling social drama, Benedict’s world narrows to a single point when he spots Sophie Baek across the room. Sophie, a maid in the Penwood household, has secretly attended the ball wearing a borrowed silver gown and mask. To Benedict, she is an enchanting, unknown noblewoman. He is captivated by her genuine joy and the fact she does not immediately recognize him as a Bridgerton.

When another man approaches her, Benedict swoops in, claiming her next dance. After she admits she cannot dance, he whisks her away to a private terrace, and later, into the moonlit gardens. Their conversation is filled with instant, sparkling chemistry. Sophie challenges his worldview, defending the debutantes who pursue him and encouraging him to “wade out deeper”. For the first time, Benedict feels truly seen.

Actor Yerin Ha, who plays Sophie, has said she drew romantic inspiration for the role from author Emily Henry’s love stories.

As an instrumental cover of Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” plays, they share a witty, intimate banter. Benedict opens up about feeling like an imposter in his own home, a sentiment Sophie understands deeply. He then teaches her to waltz to the strains of Third Eye Blind’s “Never Let You Go,” a sequence that stretches across the episode’s final act, suspending time for the pair.

A Midnight Kiss and a Mystery Begins

As the clock nears midnight, Benedict begs to know her name so he can call on her. Sophie, knowing their different social stations make this impossible, refuses. With the chime of twelve, she flees, but not before planting a passionate kiss on his lips that leaves him utterly stunned. All she leaves behind is a single white glove.

Benedict chases after her but finds only empty hallways. The episode then reveals the full truth to the audience: Sophie rushes home, removes her magnificent gown and mask, and changes back into her plain maid’s uniform. She is not a lady of the ton, but a servant working for the cruel Lady Araminta Penwood.

The episode closes with parallel scenes of longing. Sophie smiles, hiding the glove from the ball under her bed like a treasured secret. Benedict is left obsessed, holding the glove and determined to find his mystery woman. Unbeknownst to him, his search is about to become the talk of the town, as Queen Charlotte has officially decided to make finding Benedict a wife her personal project for the season.

Part 1 of Bridgerton Season 4, consisting of episodes 1 through 4, is available to stream globally on Netflix as of January 29, 2026. Part 2, containing episodes 5 through 8, will be released on February 26, 2026.
