The beloved slice-of-life manga Hirayasumi is officially getting an anime adaptation, and fans now know when they can expect to see the gentle story of Hiroto and his cousin Natsumi come to life on screen. VIZ Media, in partnership with Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions (ShoPro), released the first teaser trailer and key visual for the series on March 16, 2026, confirming that the anime will premiere on NHK in January 2027.
The announcement brings clarity to a project that has generated significant buzz since the manga began earning awards and building a devoted readership worldwide. For those who have followed the story of a carefree 29-year-old part-timer living in Tokyo’s Asagaya neighborhood, the wait now has an end date.
What Is ‘Hirayasumi’ About
At its core, Hirayasumi tells the story of Hiroto Ikuta, a 29-year-old man with no full-time job, no girlfriend, and no concrete plans for the future. Despite what society might consider a lack of direction, Hiroto is genuinely happy with his life. He spends his days working part-time jobs and building connections with the people in his neighborhood, particularly an elderly woman named Hanae Wada, whom he affectionately calls Granny.
When Granny passes away, Hiroto inherits her modest single-story house. Soon after, his 18-year-old cousin Natsumi Kobayashi moves from Yamagata to Tokyo to attend art school and ends up living with him. The series follows their daily lives, the friends and neighbors who gather around them, and the quiet moments that make up ordinary existence.
The manga’s title carries meaning beyond just the story. The Japanese word “Hirayasumi” combines “hira” (flat, single-story) with “yasumi” (rest, break), reflecting both the physical setting of the house and the emotional breathing room the story provides readers.
“Sometimes slowing down is the best way to move forward.” – Official tagline for the Hirayasumi manga from VIZ Media.
The Creative Team Behind the Anime

Production +h., the studio behind The Orbital Children and Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction, will handle animation production.
Comments From the Staff
Following the announcement, key staff members shared their thoughts about working on the adaptation.
Director Kei Suezawa expressed a strong personal connection to the material.
“When I first read Hirayasumi, I strongly felt that I wanted to turn this work into an anime. I was drawn to the story of people who seemed like they had known each other for a long time, woven together in familiar landscapes. I would like to depict Hirayasumi using expressions that are unique to animation. Please look forward to the broadcast.”
Character designer Naoyuki Asano admitted surprise at being approached for the project, given the nature of the original work.
“This work is an everyday story without any exciting action or battle scenes, and without any particularly dazzlingly handsome men or beautiful women. In this day and age, I thought it was unlikely that the original work would be made into an anime, so I was very surprised when I received the offer. I am working on the artwork to come as close as possible to Shinzo-sensei’s warm, analog-style lines, so please look forward to it.”
Art director Mika Nishimura highlighted the comforting quality of the series.
“I believe Hirayasumi is a work that creates a moment of comfort, like being gently wrapped in a blanket, with every turn of the page. Many readers, myself included, have been comforted by the people who gather in that single-story house. Our art team has poured our love into creating the artwork so that you can feel Shinzo’s gaze and warm touch.”
Composer Kaori Sawada shared a personal connection to the setting.
“Having lived in Ogikubo, right next to Asagaya, during my elementary and junior high school years, I was enveloped in a nostalgic atmosphere every time I turned the pages of the original work. That single-story house and the fishing pond seem like they could be just around the corner. I’m incredibly excited to see the world that Hiroto and his friends live in come to life as animation.”
The Manga’s Journey to Anime
Hirayasumi began serialization in Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine in April 2021. The manga is written and illustrated by Keigo Shinzo, who made his debut as a creator in 2008 with “Nankin.” Shinzo’s previous works include Bokura no Funkasai (Our Eruption Festival), while his series Tokyo Alien Bros. was adapted into a live-action drama.
The manga has received widespread critical acclaim. It won the Tokyo News Services’ TV Bros magazine Bros. Comic Award 2021 and ranked third in “The Best Manga 2022 Kono Manga wo Yome!” ranking by Freestyle magazine. The series was nominated for the 15th Manga Taishล in 2022, placing third, and received another nomination for the 17th Manga Taishล in 2024. It was also nominated for the 27th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2023.
The series has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide. In North America, VIZ Media licensed the manga for English release in October 2023, with the first volume arriving in May 2024. As of February 2025, eight volumes have been released in English, with the ninth volume scheduled for May 19, 2025.
The manga’s success led to a live-action drama adaptation that aired on NHK from November to December 2025, starring Amane Okayama as Hiroto and Nana Mori as Natsumi. The drama proved popular enough to earn a New Year’s rebroadcast in January 2026, with director Sakabe Koji noting the overwhelming positive response from viewers who found comfort in the story.
The Teaser Visual and Trailer
The newly released teaser visual shows Hiroto standing in front of the single-story house he inherited, pushing a motorcycle. The tagline “Where a house becomes a home” accompanies the image, capturing the series’ focus on finding comfort and connection in everyday spaces.
The brief promotional video offers a first look at the animation style, with warm colors and gentle movement that match the manga’s tone. The teaser confirms the anime will maintain the quiet, observational quality that made the original work stand out.

What to Expect From the Anime
The anime adaptation will air on NHK General in Japan starting January 2027. While specific episode counts and international streaming details have not been announced, VIZ Media‘s involvement as a production partner suggests the series will receive proper global distribution.
Given the source material, viewers can expect a slow-paced, character-focused series that finds drama in everyday moments rather than grand conflicts. The manga explores themes of anxiety, purpose, and human connection through the lens of ordinary people trying to figure out life on their own terms.
Hirayasumi fits within a tradition of slice-of-life stories that prioritize emotional truth over plot mechanics. For audiences who enjoyed series like Barakamon, Flying Witch, or Natsume’s Book of Friends, this adaptation should feel familiar while offering something distinctly its own.
The timing of the announcement comes as interest in the property grows following the live-action drama and continued manga releases. With over 1.5 million copies in circulation and multiple awards to its name, Hirayasumi has built a foundation that suggests the anime will find a receptive audience both in Japan and internationally.
