The hit Hulu drama Paradise has kept viewers wondering for over a year how Teri Collins made it out alive after that devastating phone call with her husband in season one. The show’s second season, which returned on February 23, 2026, has been slowly unraveling the mystery, and the latest episode finally provides the complete answer.
Episode 5, titled “The Mailman,” which arrived on March 9, reveals exactly what happened to Enuka Okuma’s character when the world seemingly ended. The story comes through the eyes of a new character named Gary, played by Cameron Britton, who claims to have been Teri’s friend and protector during the three years she spent on the surface.
But as with everything in this show, the full truth is more complicated — and darker — than it first appears.
How a Mailman’s Doomsday Plan Saved Teri’s Life
The episode introduces Gary as a lonely mailman who, years before the catastrophic events, discovered a piece of Cold War history: in the 1960s, about 1,500 post offices across the United States were officially designated as nuclear fallout shelters. Gary saw this as more than just trivia. He started preparing for the worst, stockpiling supplies in the basement of the mail distribution center where he worked.
Gary recruited his online gaming friend Ennis, played by Andy McQueen, to join him in the plan. Together, they gathered a small group of people who had useful skills — not necessarily the kind of experts you would expect, but regular people with practical abilities like making soap or fixing things.
When the disasters finally struck, Gary and Ennis rushed to their underground shelter. On the way, Gary picked up a young boy named Bean whom he knew from his mail route. While stopping to grab supplies, Bean met Teri, who was also trying to survive. Gary invited her to come with them.
That simple decision changed everything. Teri joined the small group and spent the next three years living in that post office basement, surviving alongside Gary, Ennis, Bean, and a handful of other people.
Teri’s Role as the Group’s Anchor
The flashbacks in Episode 5 show that Teri was not just a passive survivor waiting to be rescued. Enuka Okuma’s character became the emotional center of the group, the person who pushed everyone to actually live rather than just stay alive.
When the group was confined to the basement and couldn’t leave due to dangerous conditions on the surface, Teri insisted on maintaining some sense of normalcy. She celebrated Christmas every year with the group. She took care of Bean, who had clearly been through trauma before the apocalypse. She refused to let hopelessness take over.
“Teri is really the one who brought the sense of actually living and not just trying to survive out there,” Okuma told TODAY.com.
Throughout those years, Teri never stopped trying to contact her family. She repeatedly used the radio to send messages, hoping Sterling K. Brown’s character Xavier would hear her. The episode shows her frustration and heartbreak when Ennis, who initially resented her presence, smashed the radio in a moment of petty anger.
Gary developed feelings for Teri over time. The episode shows a moment where he tried to kiss her, but she made it clear she was not interested. Her heart remained with Xavier and her children, no matter how much time passed.
The Dark Turn: What Gary Hides From Xavier
When Xavier finally reaches Georgia in Episode 4, he meets Gary, who tells him that Teri has been taken by armed men. But Episode 5 reveals that Gary’s story is missing some critical details.
The flashbacks show that a train full of survivors arrived near the post office one day. These survivors were part of a convoy led by Link, the same character who is the father of Annie’s baby. The group was heading toward Colorado and welcomed anyone who wanted to join.
Ennis saw this as the opportunity Teri had been waiting for. He planned to tell her she could finally leave and reunite with her family. But Gary could not accept losing her. In a shocking moment, Gary shot Ennis in the chest before he could deliver the news.
Young Bean witnessed the entire thing. The boy now knows what Gary did, though it remains unclear whether he has told anyone or what will happen when the truth comes out.
Gary tells Xavier a different version of events. He claims that Ennis betrayed the group, that Teri was taken against her will, and that he has been trying to get her back. But the reality is that Teri most likely left willingly with the train survivors to finally make her way to Colorado and find her husband.

Where Teri Is Now and What Comes Next
As of Episode 5, Xavier has unknowingly teamed up with the man who may be responsible for keeping him separated from his wife. Gary is leading Xavier toward the train survivors, claiming they are the kidnappers who need to be dealt with. In reality, that is likely where Teri has been all along.
The series has not yet shown Teri in present time. All of her appearances have been in flashbacks, building the story of how she survived while Xavier was trapped underground. But the show is clearly building toward a reunion between the two characters.
“Anything and everything is possible,” Okuma told TODAY.com. “But this show will surprise you. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen… you don’t know where it’s going to go. And that’s the fun of this show.”
The actor confirmed that viewers will see more of Teri before the season ends, though she kept details vague. “We can expect more twists and turns that are going to take us to places that you didn’t think would happen,” she said.
The final three episodes of Paradise Season 2 are set to release weekly on Hulu, with the next episode arriving on March 16. Whether Xavier will finally reunite with his wife, discover Gary’s betrayal, or face something entirely unexpected remains to be seen.
The series has been confirmed to follow a three-season arc, with show creator Dan Fogelman (This Is Us) planning a complete story that will wrap up in Season 3.
