The new Taylor Sheridan series The Madison just wrapped up its first season on March 21, 2026, but news has already surfaced about the show’s second season. While the Clyburn family story is far from over, one key member will not be coming back. Matthew Fox, who played Paul Clyburn, has confirmed he is leaving the show after just one season.
Fox’s departure comes weeks after the premiere of Season 1. His character, the brother of Kurt Russell’s Preston Clyburn, played a major role in the early episodes. But the actor says this was always the plan.
Why Matthew Fox Decided to Leave The Madison
Matthew Fox made his name starring in the hit show Lost, which ran for six seasons. That long commitment shaped his current approach to acting. The 59-year-old actor explained that he no longer wants to spend years on a single project.
Fox shared his thoughts with The Hollywood Reporter and TV Insider:
“I’m at a point in my life where I’d rather pop in and do something interesting, but I don’t want to dedicate six years of my life to something. Taylor [Sheridan] is an exceptional writer. When I read the scripts, it really hit me where it hurts, and also made me laugh.”
He called his time on The Madison a “contained experience.” Fox also mentioned that he grew up in Wyoming, which gave him a personal connection to the Western setting. He appreciated the authenticity Taylor Sheridan brings to his shows.
How The Madison Filmed Two Seasons Back-to-Back
The Madison had an unusual production schedule. The show filmed both Season 1 and Season 2 at the same time. This decision happened because of Kurt Russell’s busy schedule.
Russell was also working on Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. So Sheridan and Michelle Pfeiffer, who also serves as an executive producer, came up with a different plan.
“Michelle Pfeiffer and Taylor were able to get together with the people at Paramount+ and said, ‘Well, let’s do two seasons instead of just one,’” Russell recalled. “And then before we start the second season next year, instead of doing that, we will start with Kurt’s stuff. We really do want him to play the guy. And we’ll get his first season out of the way first, and jam all that in there, and then go into the second season and do that.”
Because of this plan, Fox filmed all his scenes during the production of Season 2. His character’s story was closely tied to Russell’s Preston Clyburn. Since Russell filmed his Season 1 scenes later, Fox’s involvement naturally ended when that part of the story wrapped.
What Happens to Paul Clyburn in The Madison
Paul Clyburn dies in the first episode of The Madison. He and his brother Preston both lose their lives in a plane crash while flying in Montana. This tragedy is the event that changes everything for the Clyburn family.
Fox, who is a pilot in real life, shared his thoughts on that scene. He told The Hollywood Reporter that the crash bothered him because Paul seemed “a little nonchalant about the weather.” But he understood the reason.
“He only gets his brother out there for a couple weeks a year. He’s flown him to this special place. It bothered me that Paul was a little nonchalant about the weather that was moving in, but I justified it that he’s just trying to give his brother the very best birthday gift he possibly could.”
The plane crash happens off-screen. But the loss of both brothers sets the entire story in motion. It brings Stacy Clyburn (Pfeiffer) and her children to Montana, where they must deal with grief and decide what comes next.
Which Cast Members Will Return for Season 2
While Matthew Fox is leaving, almost all the other main cast members are expected back. The Madison has already completed filming for Season 2. Production wrapped in January 2026, according to cast member Elle Chapman’s social media post.
Returning cast members include:
- Michelle Pfeiffer as Stacy Clyburn
- Kurt Russell as Preston Clyburn (likely in flashbacks)
- Patrick J. Adams as Russell McIntosh
- Beau Garrett as Abby Clyburn
- Elle Chapman as Paige Clyburn
- Amiah Miller as Bridgette
- Alaina Pollack as Macy
- Ben Schnetzer as Van
- Kevin Zegers as Cade
The second season will focus more on the Clyburn family rebuilding after the events of Season 1. The Season 1 finale showed Stacy deciding to leave New York and move to Montana permanently. Her family may follow her there.
What to Expect From The Madison Season 2
Season 2 will continue the story right where Season 1 left off. Stacy chooses to stay at the Montana cabin after holding a memorial for Preston in New York. She tells neighbor Cade (Kevin Zegers) that she plans to stay for a while.
The other family members face their own choices. Abby (Beau Garrett) has a complicated relationship with sheriff Van (Ben Schnetzer). Their story is not finished. Paige (Elle Chapman) lost her job after hitting a coworker. She has nothing keeping her in New York. Russell (Patrick J. Adams) may also have reasons to leave the city.
Director Christina Voros, who directed all episodes of Season 1, returned for Season 2. She told The Hollywood Reporter that the family dynamic will deepen.
“The family unit of the Clyburns is what holds everyone together, and they’re all integral to that dynamic. So there are a lot of questions at the end of season one that will be answered when you get to season two.”
Amiah Miller, who plays oldest granddaughter Bridgette, also gave a hint about the next season’s focus.
“Season one is about the family reconnecting and learning how to survive both emotionally and physically. Season two is about them rebuilding after they’ve reconnected and finding their footing and their love for each other.”
