The upcoming Harry Potter television series is set to bring back a character that fans of the books have missed for years. Peeves the Poltergeist, the mischievous spirit who causes constant chaos at Hogwarts, was completely left out of the eight movies. Now, with the TV show planned for HBO and set to arrive in early 2027, the creators have a chance to fix that mistake.
The movies, while loved by millions, had to leave out many details from J.K. Rowling’s books. Each film had about two hours to tell the story, so characters and subplots got cut. Peeves is one of the most talked-about omissions. Fans who read the books remember him as the annoying, funny, and sometimes helpful spirit who made life hard for Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch. With each season of the TV series planned to have around eight episodes, there will finally be room for all the characters the movies missed.
Why the Movies Left Peeves Out
The choice to cut Peeves from the movies happened early in production. Actor Rik Mayall, a well-known British comedian, was actually cast as Peeves for the first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. He filmed scenes in full costume and makeup. Multiple cast members later said Mayall’s performance was so wild and funny that it kept breaking the other actors, making them laugh during takes.
But the filmmakers decided to remove the character entirely. The reasons given were about keeping the story consistent and managing the movie’s runtime. With so much plot to cover, Peeves was seen as something extra that could be taken out without hurting the main story. Mayall passed away in 2014, so the role never made it to the screen.
What Fans Can Expect from Peeves in the TV Series
The TV format gives the showrunners space to include all the moments that make Peeves such a memorable part of the books. Francesca Gardiner, who worked on Succession, is the showrunner, and Mark Mylod is directing. They have said the series will be a faithful adaptation of Rowling’s books.
In the books, Peeves does much more than just cause trouble. He throws water balloons at students, drops things on people’s heads, and sings insulting songs about teachers he does not like. He makes Dolores Umbridge’s life miserable when she takes over Hogwarts in the fifth book, following her around and making rude noises whenever she tries to speak. During the final Battle of Hogwarts, he fights against Voldemort’s followers, dropping dangerous plants on Death Eaters and joining the fight for the school.
The series can also show other ghost characters that barely appeared in the movies. Nearly Headless Nick, the Gryffindor ghost played by John Cleese, disappeared after the first two films. The books include his 500th death day party, a strange event where ghosts celebrate with rotting food and music played on saws. These moments add to the magical feeling of Hogwarts that the movies could not fully capture.
Fan Reactions and Casting Ideas
News about the TV series including cut characters has brought excitement from book fans who have waited years to see these moments on screen. Social media discussions often mention Peeves as the character they most want to see done right.
Since Mayall is no longer alive, fans have suggested several actors who could bring the same chaotic energy to the role. Mark Hamill, known for voicing the Joker in Batman cartoons, is a popular choice because of his ability to do manic, threatening voices. Rowan Atkinson, famous for Mr. Bean, gets mentioned for his physical comedy skills. Sacha Baron Cohen and Andy Serkis are also names that come up often in fan casting discussions. While no casting for Peeves has been announced yet, the role is one of the most talked-about among fans waiting for updates.

Other Cut Characters and Stories Coming Back
Peeves is not the only thing the movies left out that the TV show can include. The books have many smaller characters and side stories that add depth to the main plot. Percy Weasley, the older brother of Ron, has a full story arc in the books where he chooses the Ministry of Magic over his family, then later returns to fight alongside them. The movies show him in the background but never explain what happens with him.
Hermione’s group S.P.E.W. , the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, is another cut storyline. In the fourth book, she starts a campaign to improve conditions for house-elves like Dobby and Kreacher. The movies left this out entirely, which means viewers missed out on understanding more about how the magical world treats non-wizard beings.
The Marauders story also got shortened in the movies. In the books, James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew created the Marauder’s Map when they were students. Their friendship and how they became Animagi to help Lupin during his werewolf transformations is explained in detail. The movies only hint at this backstory.
St. Mungo’s Hospital visit in the fifth book is another important scene that did not make it into the films. Harry, Ron, and Hermione go there and see Neville Longbottom visiting his parents, who were tortured into madness by Bellatrix Lestrange. This moment gives Neville’s character much more weight and explains why he fights so hard in the final battle.
