The critically praised FX drama Shōgun is getting bigger. The show, which made history at the Emmy Awards, is currently filming its second season. Producers recently announced five new actors have joined the cast as production continues in Vancouver.
The new season will jump forward more than a decade after the events of the first season. With the story moving beyond the original book by James Clavell, the creative team is adding fresh faces to bring this new chapter to life.
Five New Actors Join the Emmy-Winning Drama
On March 23, 2026, FX confirmed that five Japanese actors have joined the ensemble for Season 2. The casting news came as cameras started rolling on the new episodes.
Here are the new additions and their character names:
- Risei Kukihara as Gabriel
- Ryô Satô as Rin
- Seishiro Nishida as Jōshin
- Mantaro Koichi as Saitō
- Takashi Yamaguchi as Kanō
This group brings together both rising talent and experienced performers. Risei Kukihara lands his first major role with this casting. Ryô Satô previously appeared in Martin Scorsese’s film Silence. Seishiro Nishida won a best producer award at the Japan Film Festival Los Angeles for his work on the 2021 film Ōtsunahiki no Koi.
Takashi Yamaguchi is likely the most familiar face to international viewers. His credits include Letters From Iwo Jima, Apple TV+’s Pachinko, and episodes of CBS’ Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. Mantaro Koichi brings experience from Japanese television, including Emergency Room 24 Hours.
The casting team, led by Kei Kawamura and Laura Schiff, is handling the additions. The pair won an Emmy for their work on the first season of the show.
Returning Cast and Production Details
Many familiar faces will return for Season 2. Hiroyuki Sanada is back as Lord Yoshii Toranaga. He also serves as an executive producer on the series. Cosmo Jarvis returns as John Blackthorne. Other returning cast members include Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno, and Yuka Kouri.
Earlier casting rounds added Asami Mizukawa, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Takaaki Enoki, Jun Kunimura, and Ren Meguro.
Production started in January 2026 in Vancouver. The show is expected to film for several months. According to Disney’s shareholder call, the series is scheduled to return sometime in 2027. An exact premiere date has not been announced yet.
What to Expect in the New Season
The story for Season 2 picks up ten years after the events of the first season. The first season covered the entirety of James Clavell’s 1975 novel. For Season 2, the writers are creating new material that continues the historically inspired saga.
Showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks have been open about their approach. They completed work on all ten episodes of Season 2 before filming began. Marks described the season as an “experiment in subverting expectations” in an interview with Wired.
The writers wanted to create a break between the first and second seasons rather than making Season 2 feel like a direct extension. Marks explained that the time jump allows the show to focus on characters dealing with loss and change.
Fumi Nikaidô’s character, Lady Ochiba, will take on a larger role in the new season. Co-creator Rachel Kondo said Ochiba’s character is placed at the center of the story for Part 2. Lady Ochiba was the mother of the late Taikō’s only heir, making her a powerful figure in Japanese society.
The Show’s Historic Success
The first season of Shōgun set records during awards season. The show won 18 Emmy Awards, the most ever for a single season. It became FX’s first series to win Outstanding Drama Series. Hiroyuki Sanada made history as the first Japanese actor to win the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Anna Sawai became the first actress of Asian descent to win Lead Actress in the same category.
The series also won a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama. It received top honors from the Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America, and Producers Guild of America.
