The Australian teen drama Heartbreak High has officially closed its doors. Following the release of its third season on March 25, 2026, Netflix confirmed that the series would not return for a fourth season. The show, a modern reboot of the iconic 1990s series, ended its run with the graduation of Hartley High.
Executive producer Carly Heaton spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the decision to wrap up the story. She explained that the creative team wanted to give every relationship in the show a proper send-off. The final season focused on the students moving from high school to adulthood, which served as the central theme for the ending.
“And, of course, we’ll be giving a nice ending to all of our beautiful relationships in the show.”
Netflix Australia and New Zealand’s official Instagram page also shared the news ahead of the Season 3 premiere. The post featured a caption that read, “ONE LAST HEARTBREAK. ONE LAST HIGH.” This confirmed that the eight-episode third season was designed as the series finale.
Why Season 3 Is The Final Chapter
The decision to end Heartbreak High with Season 3 was made intentionally by the producers and Netflix. Rather than leaving the story open-ended or canceling the show abruptly, the team crafted a final season that aimed to answer the major questions left after Season 2.
According to executive producer Carly Heaton, the finale was planned to reflect the specific pressures Australian students face. She noted that the stress of picking specific university courses at age 17 creates a unique tension. The final season explored whether young people really need to have their entire lives figured out at such a young age.
The show originally debuted on September 14, 2022, quickly entering Netflix’s Top 10 charts. Season 2 followed on April 11, 2024. All three seasons contain eight episodes each, giving fans a total of 24 episodes to enjoy.
The Malakai Letter Mystery Resolved
One of the biggest questions hanging over the series involved Malakai’s (Thomas Weatherall) letter to Amerie (Ayesha Madon). The Season 2 finale showed Malakai leaving a letter confessing his feelings, but it was destroyed in a school fire. Many fans expected the final season to reveal the full contents of that letter.
Season 3 did not read the letter aloud on screen. Instead, Malakai told Amerie his feelings in a private scene. However, viewers who wanted to know the exact words finally got answers based on a brief scene from Season 2 where Malakai wrote the letter.
The letter read:
“Thank you for being my first love. [For] still loving me even when I f****d [up]. Sometimes I think we just met each other [at the] wrong time.
You are the most amazing person Amerie and I feel like in the short time we have known each other, I have watched you become even more incredible. I wish we could have made things work out. Maybe it would have been better if we met at 30 or 60 or even 80 in a nursing home. I guess s**t is sometimes all about timing.
I thought about staying, but I just don’t feel like [I] belong here…
I promise one day, I’ll…
Love Malakai.”
The final moments of the series showed Amerie revealing she still has feelings for Malakai. The pair agreed to give their relationship another chance, bringing their story full circle.
Who Turned On The Carnival Ride
Season 3 introduced a central mystery involving a prank gone wrong. The students from Hartley High stole a bust from rival school St Bruno’s. When they tried to hide it at a local carnival, the ride they were standing on turned on, injuring the carnival manager Clancy.
For most of the season, the group suspected the masked culprit was someone trying to ruin their prank. The show eventually revealed that Sasha (Gemma Chua-Tran) was responsible. She discovered a group chat where her friends were complaining about her and planning to exclude her from the Schoolies party.
In anger, Sasha put on a costume and hid in the carnival control room. She turned on the ride to ruin her friends’ prank but did not intend to hurt anyone. In the series finale, Sasha turned herself in to police and was shown doing community service.
Cast Reflects On The Show’s End
The actors who brought Hartley High to life shared their thoughts on saying goodbye. Asher Yasbincek, who played Harper McLean, spoke with the Herald Sun about her experience on the show. She admitted that leaving the character behind was difficult.
“It was hard to say goodbye to Harper,” Yasbincek said. “She was the first character I spent that much time with. But she really does feel like a person separate to me. When I think about her, I hope she’s doing well.”
Yasbincek also discussed the friendships she built with the cast. She noted that many of them were starting their careers together, and having a mentor like Scott Majors, who starred in the original Heartbreak High, helped guide the young actors.
“The cast are all amazing. They’re all so talented, they’re all so funny, they’re all so cool. And we’re all authentically friends, which I’m really grateful for. It feels like we grew up together a little bit, at least industry wise.”
For Yasbincek, returning to a high school setting was a meaningful experience. She dropped out of school at the end of Year 10, so playing Harper allowed her to relive the years she missed. “It’s been quite nice to go back and relive the years that I didn’t get,” she explained.
