The search for the missing girls reaches a breaking point in the latest episode of the CBS series. Luke Grimes returns as Kayce Dutton in “Out of the Shadows,” the sixth episode of Season 1. The episode aired on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at 8:00 PM ET/PT.

Viewers finally learn exactly how much time has passed since Monica Dutton’s death. The episode opens with a flashback showing the moment Monica died. Text on the screen says “One Year Ago”. This confirms that Kelsey Asbille’s character has been gone for twelve months before the events of the show’s first episode.

Tate, played by Brecken Merrill, continues to struggle with losing his mother. He tells Kayce he came to her grave hoping she would cheer him up. “Hard to believe it’s been a year,” Kayce says to his son. He adds, “I know how you’re feeling. Losing your mom’s put a hole in my heart that will never heal.”

The Missing Girls Case Takes a Dangerous Turn

The team suffers a major setback early in the hour. Kayce loses the trail of the teen trafficking victims. He has to tell Tate that his friend Hayley might be gone for good. This hits Tate hard. He feels guilty about what happened at the truck stop in Episode 5.

Tate tells his father, “I just can’t stop thinking that Hayley would be safe if we had just done something when we saw her.” He believes solving this case would honor his mother’s memory. Monica fought for more resources to find missing Indigenous girls before she got sick.

The Marshals eventually get a new lead. They discover that the missing girls are now in the hands of a violent motorcycle gang called the Iron Sentinels. One character describes them as a “mafia on wheels.” The team knows they have to act fast.

Belle Skinner Goes Undercover

Arielle Kebbel’s character Belle Skinner takes on a dangerous assignment. She goes undercover at a biker rally to find the girls. She wears a full biker outfit and uses an old alias to blend in.

Things go wrong quickly. A biker recognizes Skinner from a nearby casino. He remembers her gambling under a different name: Turek. Her cover gets blown, and the team has to move fast. A shootout breaks out, but the Marshals gain control of the situation.

They find a truck filled with drugs. More importantly, they locate the missing girls inside the vehicle. The rescue mission succeeds. The team saves the victims and brings them to safety.

Kayce later tells Tate the good news. His son says, “You found your own way to honor Mom.”

A Surprise Yellowstone Star Returns

The episode delivers a special moment for Yellowstone fans. Rudy Ramos appears as Felix Long, Monica’s grandfather. He was last seen in the Yellowstone series finale.

The Broken Rock Reservation holds a remembrance ceremony for Monica. Chairman Thomas Rainwater, played by Gil Birmingham, and Mo, played by Mo Brings Plenty, attend the event. Felix Long greets Kayce warmly at the ceremony.

“Losing Monica was painful enough. Your presence makes me feel like I haven’t lost another son too.” – Felix Long

The scene carries extra weight off-screen. Kebbel tells PEOPLE that the memorial doubled as a real-life ceremony for Mo Brings Plenty’s late nephew, Cole Brings Plenty. The young actor, known for 1923, was found dead in April 2024 at age 27.

“We filmed the ceremony and Mo Brings Plenty brought his family to it, and it was a way of honoring his nephew,” Kebbel says. “I will remember that day for as long as I live. It was very emotional.”

Kayce Finally Lets Go of the Past

The episode shows Kayce holding onto Monica’s favorite necklace. He has kept it since she died. Tate has been looking for the necklace to bring to the ceremony.

At Monica’s grave, Kayce admits he has been clinging to the necklace. “Maybe it’s time I start letting go,” he says as the episode ends. The camera shows a picture of Monica, giving fans a final moment with the character.

The relationship between Kayce and Tate remains strained. Kayce tried to sell Monica’s mustang earlier in the season. He also did not want to attend the remembrance ceremony at first. Tate sees this as his father trying to move on too fast. The show continues to explore how grief affects both characters differently.

Thomas Rainwater also shares a meaningful moment with Kayce. He tells him, “I once told Monica that she made a difference because she risked everything. Perhaps she learned that from you.”

What Happened in Episode 5 Before This

Episode 5, titled “Lost Girls,” set up this week’s rescue mission. Kayce and Tate met a teen girl named Hayley at a truck stop. They later learned she had been missing for months from the Broken Rock Reservation.

The team identified a suspect named Bledsoe as the leader of the trafficking ring. A highway shootout led to Bledsoe’s death. But the girls were not in his camper. The episode ended with the victims still missing.

Episode 6 picks up right after that cliffhanger. The team now knows Bledsoe passed the ten surviving girls to the Iron Sentinels motorcycle gang.
