The Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 premiere delivered one of the most shocking moments in the series. Benjamin Poindexter, the deadly assassin known as Bullseye, saved Matt Murdock from certain death. The unexpected rescue left viewers confused. Why would Matt’s worst enemy pull him out of danger? Actor Wilson Bethel finally gives the answer.
The scene happens at the end of Episode 1. Matt Murdock fights officers from Wilson Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF). He tries to save his friend Cherry, who suffers a heart attack. This triggers terrible memories of Foggy Nelson’s death from Season 1. Matt loses focus, and the AVTF officers overpower him. They even remove his mask, exposing his identity. Right when things look hopeless, someone kills all the officers with perfect shots. Then a knife flies into the room with the words “You’re welcome” and Bullseye’s symbol on it.
The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend
Wilson Bethel spoke exclusively with The Direct about this surprising moment. He broke down exactly why his character chose to help Daredevil. The reason comes down to one simple idea: shared goals.
Bethel explained that Bullseye’s main mission right now is killing the Fisks. He wants both Wilson Fisk and Vanessa Fisk dead. Matt Murdock also wants to stop the Fisks, just in a different way. Matt wants to put them in prison or take away their power. Bullseye wants them dead. But both men are working against the same targets.
“I think it’s his main mission now is killing the Fisks. And they just happen to be on parallel tracks. I mean, obviously Matt doesn’t want to kill them, but he wants to put them out of commission or whatever.” – Wilson Bethel
Bethel used a very old saying to describe the situation.
“So the fact that they are on a shared objective. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. So that’s where they start the season. It is a really fun place for us to see these two very different characters.” – Wilson Bethel
Bullseye Wants Revenge on Vanessa Fisk
The second episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 gives more clues about Bullseye’s true target. His attention seems to focus more on Vanessa Fisk than on the Mayor himself. This makes perfect sense when you remember what happened in Season 1.
Vanessa used Bullseye to kill Foggy Nelson. That job got Bullseye badly injured and sent to prison. He has a major score to settle with her. Working against Fisk means working against Vanessa too. So keeping Daredevil alive helps Bullseye get closer to his real goal.
In Episode 2, Bullseye also visits the same church that once helped Daredevil. He goes there looking for Sister Maggie. When he learns she is not there, he asks for penance instead. This suggests Bullseye might be thinking about redemption, or at least considering a different path for himself.
A New Kind of Bullseye
Wilson Bethel had already teased before the season that fans would see a different side of Benjamin Poindexter. He told Collider that Season 2 would show “some sides of his personality that we haven’t seen yet.”
Getting the call to return for Daredevil: Born Again meant a lot to Bethel. He called it “one of the great surprising gifts of my entire career.” He also said he gets to do “so much fun, insane stuff” in the new season.
Marvel Studios had already hinted at a redemption arc for Bullseye heading into Season 2. With Jon Bernthal’s Punisher not appearing this season, the show seems to be putting Bethel’s character into a similar morally conflicted role. Daredevil has much more reason to hate Bullseye than he ever hated Frank Castle. Bullseye killed Foggy. That makes any team-up very difficult to accept. But the show is moving forward with this unlikely partnership anyway.

What This Means for the Rest of the Season
The alliance between Daredevil and Bullseye is not a friendship. Bethel makes that very clear. These two men simply have the same enemies right now. Bullseye needs Daredevil alive because Daredevil is leading the fight against Fisk. If the AVTF captured or killed Matt, Bullseye would lose his best chance at getting to the Fisks.
This setup creates a very tense situation for viewers. Matt cannot trust Bullseye. Bullseye cannot trust Matt. But they might have to work together anyway. The question is how long this arrangement can last. Bullseye is still a killer. Daredevil refuses to kill. That difference will likely cause problems between them.
New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 release weekly on Disney+. The season finale is scheduled for May 5, 2026. A special episode about the Punisher will follow one week later, connecting to his appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
