What Happens in Episode 1 The Magic That Started Everything

The first episode shows us Coco’s normal life. She lives in a small village with her mother, who runs a dressmaking shop. Coco helps her mother with work, but she always dreams of magic. As a young child, she bought a picture book from a masked witch at a festival. The witch also gave her a strange-looking wand. Coco believed for years that she could do magic because the ground lit up when she walked on it during that festival night.

Her mother tells her the same thing everyone believes. Only people born as witches can use magic. Coco accepts this and keeps working at the shop. One day, a young witch named Qifrey comes to buy fabric. He notices Coco’s skill with cutting cloth and says her work is “like magic”.

Soon after, some local boys break a pegasus-drawn carriage outside the shop. Qifrey offers to fix it with magic. He tells everyone to stay outside and not watch. Coco cannot control her curiosity. She peeks inside and sees Qifrey using a pen to draw symbols that create magic. This is the secret that witches hide from normal people. Magic is not something you are born with. Anyone who knows how to draw the symbols can cast spells.

That night, Coco takes out her old picture book and the wand, which she now understands is actually a special pen. She starts drawing the symbols from the book. Small spells work fine. But then she tries a more difficult one. The spell activates and traps her mother inside blue crystal-like stone. Qifrey appears just in time to save Coco from the same fate.

Qifrey explains that normal people who learn the truth about magic usually get their memories erased. But he offers Coco a different choice. She can become his apprentice and learn real magic. Her goal will be to find a way to save her mother.

Episode 2 Summary The School of the Grassland

The second episode takes Coco to Qifrey’s atelier, which is a hidden school where he trains young witches. She meets the other students who live and study there. Tetia is a cheerful girl who welcomes Coco right away. Richeh is quiet but kind. Agott is the top student and she does not like having a newcomer join without proving herself.

Qifrey gives Coco a history lesson about magic. Long ago, anyone could use magic, and people created many dark and harmful spells. A group of good witches decided to erase the knowledge of magic from most of humanity. They created the lie that witches are born, not made. Only trusted people get taught the truth. Magic that affects the human body is forbidden, including healing and transformation spells. The spell Coco used on her mother is forbidden magic.

Coco learns that the only way to save her mother is to find another copy of the picture book she used. The book might contain the reverse spell. The Tower of Tomes is a magical library that holds a copy of every magic book ever created. But only witches who pass four trials can enter. Coco now has a clear goal. She must study hard, pass the trials, and find the book that can undo her mistake.

At the end of the episode, Qifrey leaves the atelier for a few days. Agott sees this as her chance to test the new girl. She challenges Coco to prove she deserves to be there.

Animation Quality and Production Team

BUG FILMS produced the anime with director Ayumu Watanabe leading the project. Watanabe has worked on shows like Space Brothers and Summertime Rendering. He explained that the biggest challenge was adapting the manga’s detailed art style into animation.

The original Witch Hat Atelier manga is known for its beautiful, storybook-like drawings. The anime team used special techniques to keep that feeling. Some scenes use pop-up book style transitions and woodblock print effects to match the manga’s look.

Yuka Kitamura, who made music for the video game Elden Ring, composed the soundtrack. The opening song is Kaze no Anthem by Eve featuring suis. The ending song is Tada Utsukushii no Noroi by Nakamura Hak.

The Japanese voice cast includes well-known actors. The English dub features Anjali Kunapaneni as Coco and Joshua A. Waters as Qifrey.

Fan Response to the First Two Episodes

Early reactions to the double premiere have been strong. Viewers praise the animation quality and the emotional weight of Coco’s story. One fan review gave both episodes an A grade, calling the premiere a strong start that could become an all-time classic if the quality continues.

Critics note that the pacing works well. The two episodes cover the first few chapters of the manga without rushing or adding unnecessary scenes. The decision to show two episodes at once gives viewers a complete introduction to Coco’s world and her tragic mistake.

The magic system has also gotten attention. The idea that magic comes from drawing symbols is simple to understand but allows for creative storytelling. Many viewers say the show feels different from typical fantasy anime because it focuses on the responsibility that comes with power.

Witch Hat Atelier is streaming now on Crunchyroll. New episodes release every Monday.
