The Apple TV+ crime drama Criminal Record finished its second season on June 10, 2026, with a tense episode titled “Nobody Dies.” The finale delivered high-stakes action as detectives worked against the clock to stop a coordinated terrorist attack across London. But the episode ended with a shocking personal tragedy that left DI June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) completely broken.
The season followed Lenker and DCI Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) as they tried to stop far-right extremist Cosmo Thompson (Dustin Demri-Burns) from carrying out multiple bombings. The finale wrapped up the terror plot but added a devastating twist that no one saw coming.
How Police Stopped Cosmo Thompson’s Bombing Plot
The finale picked up right after Episode 7, with Cosmo already in police custody. He got himself arrested on purpose, knowing his followers would use the distraction to carry out the bombings. Lenker and Hegarty had Cosmo at the station, but they did not know the attack locations.
During questioning, Cosmo refused to cooperate at first. He laughed off the evidence and claimed his extremist content was just material for his online livestreams. He tried to scare the detectives by saying his movement would eventually replace people like them.
But Lenker and Hegarty found his weakness. They explained that if foreign citizens died in the attacks, other countries would get involved. Cosmo could face extradition and much harsher punishment. That possibility terrified him.
The bravado disappeared instantly. Cosmo asked for a lawyer and agreed to share the target locations in exchange for full immunity from prosecution. Lenker hated the deal, but Hegarty pushed her to accept. With only minutes before the scheduled detonations, she agreed.
Cosmo revealed three targets: East Ham Halal Market, the Clairmont Hotel (which housed asylum seekers), and the Immigration Centre at Moorgate. His followers planned to leave bombs in backpacks at these crowded spots and trigger the explosions remotely.
Police raced to stop them. At the market, officers confronted Andy, who refused to surrender and was killed. At the immigration centre, Phil and Nigel arrived, but police had already evacuated most of the building. Officers shot both men before they could set off their bombs. Kieran, who was assigned to the hotel, sensed something was wrong when he arrived. The location felt too empty. He briefly thought about blowing up the school where he worked but ultimately gave up and surrendered to police.
All seven detonators were recovered. The coordinated attack failed. From a police standpoint, the mission was a complete success.
The Gut-Wrenching Car Explosion That Changed Everything
Just when it seemed like the crisis was over, the episode delivered its most shocking moment. Lenker called her estranged partner Leo Hanratty (Stephen Campbell Moore) to say she was safe. But their relationship had been falling apart for months. Lenker had an affair with JP Brownlee (Luke Pasqualino), and Leo found out in the previous episode.
During the phone call, Leo told Lenker she needed to find her own place to live. She agreed. They said goodbye, but Leo forgot to hang up. In anger, he called her a bad name. Lenker heard everything. Leo apologized and started talking about the life he always wanted with her. He confessed he dreamed of having a child. He was about to ask her if it was too late for them.
Then the car exploded.
Leo died instantly. Lenker heard the blast through the phone. She arrived at the scene completely devastated. The attack was meant for her. Someone in Cosmo’s network had targeted Lenker because she was the police officer dismantling their plans. Leo was simply in the wrong car at the wrong time.
Hegarty later asked Cosmo about the explosion. Cosmo joked that a fan probably did it, but he did not claim responsibility. The show strongly suggested that Kieran, who had found Lenker’s address through dark web contacts, was behind the attack.
What Happened to Cosmo After the Deal
Six weeks later, Cosmo appeared surprisingly comfortable. He continued running his extremist platform and gained more followers. Most of his supporters did not know he had sold out his own gang members to save himself.
But Cosmo was not completely free. Police seized his passport, limiting his travel. Hegarty seemed determined to keep Cosmo on a short leash rather than letting him go completely. The arrangement felt less like freedom and more like control. Dangerous ideas do not disappear overnight, and the show made it clear the threat remained even after the immediate crisis ended.
Billy Fielding (Luther Ford) , the young undercover officer who infiltrated Cosmo’s group, survived but paid a heavy emotional price. His trust in the police system was almost completely destroyed. He spent months living in constant fear, and the experience left him shattered.
