The Evil Dead franchise has never been shy about blood and violence. The upcoming sixth installment, Evil Dead Burn, takes that reputation to another level. The film arrives in theaters this week, and the cast recently opened up about the one scene that even made them uncomfortable while filming.
Evil Dead Burn hits screens on July 10, 2026. The movie comes from director Sรฉbastien Vaniฤek and is produced by franchise creator Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. It is the sixth entry in the horror series, following 2023’s Evil Dead Rise.
The Head-Crushing Scene That Disturbed the Cast
During an interview with Hindustan Times, stars Hunter Doohan, Souheila Yacoub, and Luciane Buchanan discussed the film’s most shocking moment. Doohan, known for his role in Wednesday, pointed to a particular scene involving his character.
“That for me that it’s was one of the first things we teased where I’m smashing something. That means when I’m crushing someone’s head with my bare hands”.
The actor described the scene carefully to avoid spoilers. But the description alone gives a clear picture of the film’s brutal nature. The head-crushing moment stands out as one of the most intense sequences in a franchise known for pushing boundaries.
Other outlets have also highlighted the film’s extreme violence. Director Sรฉbastien Vaniฤek confirmed that one scene was so violent it had to be cut to avoid an NC-17 rating. The director’s cut will include even more graphic content than what audiences will see in theaters.
Playing the Hunter vs. the Victim
Luciane Buchanan plays Thya in the film. Her character starts as a normal woman but transforms into a Deadite as the story moves forward. She then hunts her own boyfriend, played by Doohan.
When asked which role was more fun, Buchanan did not hesitate.
“Oh, the hunter, 100%. It’s so fun. Just teasing them and getting inside their heads was so, so fun”.
The actor clearly enjoyed the darker side of her character. Playing a villain in the Evil Dead universe comes with a certain freedom. The franchise allows actors to fully embrace chaos and terror.
Would the Cast Survive a Zombie Apocalypse
The interview also touched on a lighter topic. The actors were asked how they would fare in a real zombie apocalypse.
Doohan gave an honest answer.
“I’d give up. If it’s zombie-apocalypse preparation, it’s just too much for me. I’m out”.
Buchanan quickly jumped in with a plan.
“So, we’ll sacrifice Hunter first ’cause he’s happy to go. And then we’ll (her and Souheila) talk about it, cry about it, and then probably I’ll go next”.
The exchange showed the cast’s chemistry and sense of humor. Even while making a brutal horror film, the actors kept things light between takes.
The Technical Side of Horror
Shooting a horror film often comes with stories of strange occurrences. But the cast of Evil Dead Burn said their experience was different. The production was so technical that they never had time to think about anything spooky.
Buchanan explained how planned everything was.
“It’s planned so meticulously that it’s not scary at all. Honestly, it was like we’re in a sports team all together”.
Yacoub shared details about a complex one-shot take.
“I remember the oner (the film’s one-shot take), for example. It was just me crawling, but at the rhythm of the scene, like pitch it up and run. I have a camera in front of me. I need to be low because of the camera, because if I go too high, they see the cable, and I need to get the right rhythm, because then they need to catch the table, but not too close to. I had thousands of stuff I needed to think of for that scene. So it was very complicated but beautiful”.
Her description shows how much work goes into creating horror on screen. The actors had to focus on camera angles, timing, and movement while also delivering emotional performances.
What Evil Dead Burn Is About
The film follows Alice, played by Souheila Yacoub. After her husband dies suddenly, she travels to her in-laws’ remote countryside home to mourn with his estranged family. Isolated from the outside world, she faces relentless horror and must fight for survival against an unstoppable evil.
The story takes place during a family reunion that turns into a nightmare. One family member discovers an ancient book, and Deadites begin transforming the gathering into hell on earth.
Hunter Doohan plays Joseph, the grieving brother. Luciane Buchanan appears as Thya, an outsider who gets trapped in the family home. The cast also includes Tandi Wright, Erroll Shand, Maude Davey, and others.
Behind the Scenes
Sรฉbastien Vaniฤek directs and co-writes the film. He previously made his directorial debut with 2024’s Infested. Sam Raimi, who created the original Evil Dead franchise, produces alongside Rob Tapert through Ghost House Pictures.
Bruce Campbell, who played Ash Williams in the original films, serves as an executive producer. Lee Cronin, director of Evil Dead Rise, also executive produces.
The film is a standalone story within the Evil Dead universe. New viewers can watch it without seeing the previous movies. But long-time fans will find connections to the larger franchise.
Release and Box Office Expectations
Evil Dead Burn opens in theaters on July 10, 2026. Warner Bros. Pictures distributes the film domestically. New Line Cinema and Screen Gems present the production.
The film originally had a July 24 release date. The studio moved it up by two weeks. This change puts it in a prime summer slot.
Box office tracking suggests a strong opening. Early estimates predict a domestic opening weekend between $30 million and $40 million. This would put it ahead of Evil Dead Rise, which opened with $24.5 million in 2023.
The film needs to earn at least $147.1 million worldwide to become the highest-grossing entry in the franchise. Evil Dead Rise currently holds that record with $147.1 million globally.
