Actor Lee Byung-hun reveals his reaction to the twist involving his character, Front Man, and reflects on the emotional impact of his role in season 2.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Squid Game Season 2.
In Squid Game Season 2, the chilling twist involving Front Man, portrayed by Lee Byung-hun, left viewers in shock. As the season progressed, the character of In-ho (Front Man) was revealed to have played a much deeper role in the deadly game than anyone anticipated, ultimately leading to a tense and brutal cliffhanger.
Byung-hun, who has skillfully embodied the character, shared his thoughts on the surprising developments in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. The actor was as stunned as the audience when he read the script, particularly the pivotal moment at the end of episode 3, where his character, disguised as Player 001, joins the game.
“I was thinking about, how am I going to bring to life, the way he carries on the game as Yong-il,” Byung-hun explained, referring to the false identity that Front Man assumes while interacting with Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae). “This is going to be quite a challenge as an actor, because within the games, he’s part Front Man, part In-ho, but then he’s also part Yong-il, which is the fake persona that he creates.”
The complexity of this dual role required a delicate balancing act. Byung-hun revealed that the challenge lay in portraying all three identities—Front Man, In-ho, and Yong-il—without confusing the audience. “How I’m going to control each aspect of him, that was my main focus,” he said. “I had to have moments where you could see all of them—Front Man, In-ho, and Yong-il—through just my acting.”
The Tension Behind the Final Betrayal
In the thrilling finale of Squid Game season 2, Gi-hun and his ally, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), believed they had finally made progress in their fight against the deadly game. After an intense battle where Gi-hun’s rebellion seemed poised for success, the Front Man revealed his true role by betraying the players, culminating in a shocking moment where he executes Jung-bae in front of Gi-hun.
Byung-hun recalls how filming the scenes leading up to the betrayal was both intense and emotionally draining. “The days I spent on set filming those scenes when the Front Man is part of the game as Yong-il… it actually took us a few months. It’s almost as if we had formed that same sense of camaraderie working alongside the other players,” he said. “So, in a way, to get to that [finale betrayal] moment, it felt bittersweet. I felt like, this is our goodbye.”
The actor also discussed how important the transition from Yong-il to Front Man was for his character. “To become the Front Man, to be back in that position from the Front Man’s perspective, that’s the point where he decides to really teach Gi-hun a lesson by getting rid of his best friend,” Byung-hun noted. “That was when I also felt like, this is definitely going to be a moment when the audiences are going to be very shocked.”
Behind the Scenes of the Show’s High Stakes
Filming for these intense scenes required more than just acting—it was a psychological challenge for Byung-hun as well. The actor shared that portraying the various layers of his character in a high-stakes environment took both mental and physical effort. “It was difficult to portray all three sides to the character, and to figure out which persona needed to come through in each scene,” Byung-hun said, acknowledging how important it was to deliver the right moment for the audience’s emotional reaction.
The level of commitment required from the cast in bringing the complex story to life was evident, as Byung-hun and his co-stars spent months filming intricate scenes that would ultimately reveal the full extent of Front Man’s devious plans. Despite the betrayal, the actor believed the twist was a brilliant move by the director to add depth to the storyline.
“Even though it’s just two games, it actually took us a few months to film those scenes,” Byung-hun shared. “It was a complex and emotional journey, both on and off screen.”
