The final season of The Boys is here, and the show is keeping its promise that nobody walks away unharmed. Eric Kripke, the creator of the Prime Video series, has made it clear from the first episode that this is not a season with happy endings for everyone. The stakes are higher than ever, and the body count is already rising.
The fifth and final season started streaming on April 8, 2026, with two episodes. Right away, fans saw a major character die. That death was not an accident. It was a clear message from the writers that the rules have changed. If you think your favorite hero or villain is safe, you might want to think again.
Eric Kripke Confirms the Main Gang Faces Real Danger in The Boys Season 5
Kripke has said many times that nobody is safe in this last run of episodes. In talks with different news outlets, he explained that the writing team pushed hard to make sure the audience feels the danger every single week. One writer told him, โYou keep saying nobodyโs safe, put your money where your mouth is.โ That advice led to killing off a main character in the very first episode.
Karl Urban, who plays Billy Butcher, also warned fans before the season came out. He told Variety that deaths happen โright from the get-goโ and that viewers should expect shocking moments in every episode. Urban said, โNobody is safe. Fatalities right from the start.โ
Kripke admitted that making those phone calls to actors to tell them their characters would die was very hard. He told Deadline, โIt was a really hard callโฆ that was not the only one of those calls I had to make this season, and they were hard every time.โ
The First Major Death Sets the Tone for The Boys Season 5
A-Train, played by Jessie T. Usher, died at the end of the first episode titled โFifteen Inches of Sheer Dynamite.โ Homelander snapped his neck after A-Train saved Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) from certain death. It was a sad but heroic ending for a character who spent the whole show trying to do the right thing.
A-Train finally stopped running from Homelander. He looked his enemy in the eye and laughed at him, calling him weak and pathetic. That moment of bravery cost him his life, but it gave him a proper ending to his story.
Kripke explained why A-Train had to die first. He said the three people Homelander hates the most are Butcher, Starlight (Erin Moriarty), and A-Train. Since the show could not kill Butcher or Starlight in the first episode, A-Train was the one who had to go. The writers originally planned to kill him in episode three, but they decided to do it earlier to shock the audience and prove that no one has protection.
Soldier Boyโs Survival Changes Everything
The second episode of the new season brought a big twist. Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) did not die after being exposed to the supe-killing virus. Hughie and Frenchie (Tomer Capone) released the virus in a sealed room with Soldier Boy, and he survived. This changes the whole game for Butcherโs plan.
Kripke told TV Insider that Soldier Boyโs immunity to the virus sets up the main mystery of the season. He said, โSuddenly, there is a way to survive the virus, and so it becomes a race of who acquires it.โ If Homelander gets that immunity, it is over for everyone. If The Boys get it, they might save the people they love. The whole season becomes a race to control this secret.
Butcherโs Dark Path Leads to More Deaths
Billy Butcher is more dangerous than ever in season five. The episode showed him killing his own father, Sam Butcher (John Noble), who was dying of cancer. Butcher showed no mercy and ended his fatherโs life himself. This action shows how far he is willing to go.
Butcher wants to use the supe-killing virus to wipe out all superpowered people. His plan is simple but deadly. He does not care about collateral damage. He only cares about finishing the job. This puts him in direct conflict with other members of the team who still have some moral boundaries.
The Gen V Kids Will Show Up Later
Fans of the spin-off show Gen V will be happy to know that some of those characters will appear in The Boys season five. Kripke confirmed that the Gen V kids show up โmore towards the end runโ of the season. Marie Moreau and her team are doing their own work, but they will cross paths with The Boys before everything ends.
This connection between the two shows means that deaths might not be limited to just the main cast. Characters from Gen V could also face deadly endings.

The Main Gang Faces Impossible Odds
The first episode shows Hughie, Motherโs Milk (Laz Alonso), and Frenchie locked up in a โFreedom Campโ run by Vought. These camps hold anyone who speaks against Homelander. The three men face daily dangers from guards and other supes who punish prisoners for breaking rules.
Annie January (Starlight), played by Erin Moriarty, has been hiding and trying to build a resistance. But she is running low on hope. Kripke explained that Annie does not see a happy ending for herself. She thinks there is no way out alive, so she has become more willing to make hard choices.
Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) can now talk after being mute for four seasons. She was deported to the Philippines, where she went to therapy and found her voice. Kripke said the writers landed on making her โreally sweet, really violent, and very no bullshit.โ Her new voice adds a fresh element to the team.
Homelander Rules a Broken America
Homelander (Antony Starr) has complete control over the country at the start of season five. He has canceled DEI programs, put his enemies in camps, and turned the government into his personal tool. But he is still not happy.
Kripke explained that Homelander has achieved the most powerful position on the planet, but he is still miserable. The showrunner said, โHe always thinks, well, if I can make it to the next step, then Iโll finally be happy, not understanding that what he needs to do is look inside at the gaping vacant void that is his soul.โ This season, Homelander starts to see himself as a god, which makes him even more dangerous.
The season takes direct shots at Christian nationalism and the mixing of religion with violent politics. Kripke said they wanted to criticize the idea that Christianity should support violent and racist policies.

What the Showrunner Says About Survival
Kripke has not hidden the fact that more main characters will die. When asked about the difficult phone calls he had to make to actors, he said there were multiple calls this season. That means several beloved characters will not make it to the end.
The writers want the audience to feel that any character could die at any moment. By killing A-Train in the first episode, they proved that the old rules do not apply. Jack Quaid, Karl Urban, Erin Moriarty, and others could all meet their end before the series finale on May 20.
New cast member Daveed Diggs joins season five as โOh Father,โ a supe pastor who marries Ashley Barrett (Colby Minifie). His role adds another layer to the religious themes of the season.
