When you think of Tim Curry, you probably remember him as the sweet-talking Dr. Frank-N-Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show or the creepy clown in Stephen King’s It. But did you know this legendary actor also stepped into the galaxy far, far away? For a short but important time, Tim Curry provided the voice for one of the most powerful villains in movie history: Emperor Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, in the hit animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Here is a breakdown of which episodes he appeared in, why the voice actor changed, and how fans reacted to his performance.
Tim Curry Took Over as Palpatine for Seasons 5 and 6
Tim Curry joined the cast of Star Wars: The Clone Wars during the show’s fifth season. He took on the role of Chancellor Palpatine, the seemingly kind leader of the Galactic Republic who is secretly the evil Sith Lord manipulating the entire war.
Tim Curry voiced the character in the final episodes of Season 5 and continued through the sixth season. Specifically, his work is featured in major episodes like the Season 5 finale titled “The Wrong Jedi” and the Season 6 arc focusing on the mysterious “Order 66” conspiracy, including the episode “Orders.” He brought his unique style to the character, balancing the friendly political voice of the Chancellor with the deep, menacing growl of Darth Sidious.
Why The Voice of Palpatine Changed Mid-Series
Palpatine sounds different in the earlier seasons of The Clone Wars compared to Seasons 5 and 6. That is because the original voice actor, Ian Abercrombie, was the first to voice the character in the series.
Sadly, Ian Abercrombie passed away in January 2012. Because the show was still in production, the creative team needed to find a new actor to finish recording the remaining episodes of Season 5 and the upcoming Season 6.
Dave Filoni, the supervising director of The Clone Wars, explained that finding the right replacement was not easy. They needed someone who could match the high standard set by both Ian Abercrombie (the series voice) and Ian McDiarmid (the actor who plays Palpatine in the live-action movies).
We had an extensive search to find a new voice for Palpatine. It wasn’t just a matter of finding an actor who could recreate lines from the films. We needed someone to deliver a performance that could stand alongside what Ian McDiarmid and Ian Abercrombie created. There is little question that bringing in an actor of Tim’s caliber was perfect for Chancellor Palpatine.

Dave Filoni also noted that Tim Curry could tap into the “dark side” easily, delivering a delightfully evil Sidious voice while keeping the elegance needed for the Chancellor.

Fan Reactions to Curry’s Performance
Because Tim Curry has such a distinct and famous voice, fans were initially surprised to hear him in the Star Wars universe. However, the reaction to his performance has largely been very positive.
Many viewers felt that his voice naturally fit the manipulative nature of Palpatine. On social media and fan forums, viewers noted that Tim Curry’s version “oozed diabolical intent” and that he did a great job stepping into such a major role. His delivery of chilling lines in episodes like “Orders” left a strong impression on audiences.
Tim Curry voiced the character for a total of about 10 episodes, covering the end of the series’ original run. Even though he only held the role for a short time, his contribution helped close out the intense story arcs about the conspiracy behind the Clone Army.
