Paramount+ has already renewed the Taylor Sheridan series for a third season, but viewers are concerned the grief drama starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell might stretch too thin.
The Madison arrived on Paramount+ on March 14, 2026, and quickly became creator Taylor Sheridan’s biggest TV debut ever. The show pulled in more than 8 million global views in its first 10 days. The series follows the Clyburn family from New York City as they move to Montana after a terrible plane crash kills the family’s father, Preston Clyburn (played by Kurt Russell), and his brother Paul Clyburn (played by Matthew Fox).
Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Stacy Clyburn, the grieving wife and mother trying to keep her family together while dealing with loss in a new place.
Now, even before anyone has seen season 2, Paramount+ announced on April 14, 2026, that The Madison will return for a third season. That news has many fans worried that the story is being stretched out just to keep the show going.
Fans Question If There Is Enough Story For Three Seasons
The renewal news has created a split reaction among viewers. While many are happy to see more of the show, others are raising concerns on social media about where the plot can actually go from here.
The first season ended with the Clyburn family starting to heal and find their footing in Montana. But some fans feel the core story — a family dealing with sudden loss — might not have enough material for multiple seasons.
A Reddit user shared a common worry:
“I didn’t even know there was going to be a season 2, I figured it’d be a miniseries because of the plot… I hope they don’t drag it out though. It’s clearly meant to be she moves to Montana and her oldest daughter moves as well to be with the good looking sheriff guy lol”
On X (formerly Twitter), one viewer expressed confusion about the show’s direction:
“I don’t understand what the plot is going to be. Season 1 plot is dad dies so family reunite and their mother gives them a lecture every 10 minutes because they are ‘bad children’.”
Another fan simply pointed out the unusual timing:
“Season 2 hasn´t come out yet, and they are already doing a third season.”
A different viewer criticized the larger Yellowstone franchise approach:
“We’re still making Yellowstone spinoffs when the original lost steam seasons ago? Let’s focus on fresh ideas instead of milking a tired cow.”
How Kurt Russell’s Role Led To Two Seasons Being Filmed Back To Back
The reason season 2 is already finished comes down to Kurt Russell’s busy schedule. Russell had committed to the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+, which made it impossible for him to film The Madison on the normal timeline.
Russell explained in a January 2026 interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“Michelle Pfeiffer and Taylor were able to get together with the people at Paramount+ and said, ‘Well, let’s do two seasons instead of just one.’ And then before we start the second season next year, instead of doing that, we will start with Kurt’s stuff. We really do want him to play the guy. And we’ll get his first season out of the way first, and jam all that in there, and then go into the second season and do that. And so we were able to do that.”
Actor Ben Schnetzer, who plays Van Davis on the show, confirmed that filming for season 2 wrapped not long before the first season even premiered. This means both seasons 1 and 2 are completely finished and ready to go.
Matthew Fox Will Not Return For Season 2
One confirmed cast change for the second season involves Matthew Fox. The Lost star played Paul Clyburn, the brother who also dies in the plane crash. Fox appears in season 1 primarily through flashback scenes.
Fox told TV Insider that his time on The Madison was always planned as a limited experience:
“This is a contained experience for me in the show, and I’m very happy about that…It’s been an incredible experience.”
Patrick J. Adams (known for Suits) plays Russell McIntosh on the show and shared his excitement about continuing the story. In a March 17 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Adams said the cast would “shoot [The Madison] gladly forever. We’ve found something kind of miraculously special here and as long as it’s a story that people want to hear, we’d be happy to tell it.”
What To Expect From Season 2’s Story
While a release date for season 2 has not been announced yet, the cast has shared some hints about what is coming. Kurt Russell told Variety that the second season raises the stakes significantly.
“I think it’s fair to say that in season 2 — and I believe Michelle will agree with me — what happens is the level of real danger goes up. Things begin to become dangerous in realistic ways.”
Michelle Pfeiffer added her own description of season 2’s focus:
“It’s after the initial stage of raw grief passes, and some time has gone by. It’s the messy and profound rebuilding of everything that you knew after everything that you knew has fallen apart and what that looks like.”
Jane Wiseman, Paramount+’s executive vice president and head of originals, told Entertainment Weekly in March that the story has room to grow. “I mean, this is, again, a love story — and an evolution,” she said. “and so I do feel like there’s a lot more to tell.”

Despite the concerns, many viewers are happy about the early renewal. The show’s strong ratings and positive reviews have built a solid fan base. The series holds a nearly 8-star rating on IMDb.
Christina Voros, who directs the series and works closely with Sheridan, told The Hollywood Reporter that the cast and crew have developed a strong bond. “Any time you get a show together with a cast like this, you kind of want it to go forever. And I think having completed the second season, you just fall more and more in love with them as a family.”
The six-episode first season of The Madison is streaming now on Paramount+ in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions where the service is available. Season 2 does not yet have a confirmed release date, but season 3 has already been given the green light.
