The world of professional fighting took a dark turn on the latest episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 27. The episode, titled “Gimmick,” introduced a character that many viewers immediately recognized. That face belonged to a Hollywood veteran known for playing some of the most memorable bad guys in movie history.

Mark Rolston, widely known for his role as the prison gang leader Bogs Diamond in the 1994 classic The Shawshank Redemption, appeared as Client O’Neil. He played a professional fighter and predator who becomes the focus of Captain Olivia Benson’s investigation. This marks another strong guest spot for the actor who has been scaring audiences for nearly 40 years.

Mark Rolston Plays Predator Client O’Neil in the Latest Episode

Mark Rolston took on the role of Client O’Neil, a fighter nicknamed “The Executioner” who wears a bondage mask during his matches. The character seems like a tough professional athlete on the surface. But the SVU team quickly discovers a much darker truth.

O’Neil is a predator who groomed young boys who looked up to him. He abused them and forced them to sign Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) to keep them quiet. The victim in the episode, a young fighter named Ian Larkin, was one of these boys. The trauma led Ian down a path of drug addiction. When Ian found a legal loophole to sue his abuser, O’Neil decided to silence him for good. He followed Ian to a motel room and committed the murder.

Rolston played the part with a cold, calm menace. When the detectives cornered him, O’Neil did not show fear. He smugly promised to destroy the victim’s reputation in court. The episode ended with a twist fitting for Law & Order. Ian’s brother, Shawn Larkin, killed O’Neil in the streets to avenge the murder.

Where You Have Seen the Shawshank Redemption Actor Before

For many fans, Mark Rolston will always be Bogs Diamond. In The Shawshank Redemption, he played the leader of “The Sisters,” a group of prison r*pists who terrorize Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) during his early years at Shawshank. It is a small but unforgettable part in one of the most loved movies of all time.

But Rolston’s career goes far beyond that film. He started his run as a heavy in James Cameron‘s 1986 sci-fi horror film Aliens, where he played Private Drake. He has worked with top directors many times. He played a crooked cop in Lethal Weapon 2. He was Agent Russ in the action comedy Rush Hour starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. He also played Delahunt, one of Jack Nicholson‘s gangsters, in Martin Scorsese‘s Oscar-winning film The Departed.

His voice acting work is just as impressive. He has voiced the Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) in Spider-Man video games and Lex Luthor in the Young Justice animated series.

A History of Playing Memorable Villains

Mark Rolston was born on December 7, 1956. He studied acting at the Drama Centre London. His ability to switch between live-action roles and voice work has kept him busy for five decades.

He has also become a familiar face on television dramas. Fans of police shows have seen him as Lieutenant Thone in Bosch, in The Rookie: Feds, and now as the deadly Client O’Neil on Law & Order: SVU.

A Star-Studded Episode with Melissa McCarthy

Rolston was not the only big name in the “Gimmick” episode. Comedy superstar Melissa McCarthy also made a surprise appearance. She played Jasmyn Jewell, a professional fighter with a very open crush on Captain Benson.

The scene played out for laughs. McCarthy’s character flirted heavily with Mariska Hargitay, calling her attractive and joking about knowing her way around handcuffs. Hargitay later shared that she had no idea McCarthy was coming to the set. The producers kept the casting a secret for six years to surprise her.

When McCarthy walked onto the set wearing a wrestling belt and a mullet, Hargitay screamed in shock. McCarthy wrote on Instagram that the day was “PURE JOY” in a world that often feels heavy.
