The next trip for The White Lotus is going to France, and it turns out the idea for this setting came from a very funny and unexpected dinner moment. Producer David Bernad recently shared the whole story of how a simple encounter with a waiter and a maรฎtre dโ in Cannes made the team cancel all their other plans. The story happened at the Canneseries Festival, where Bernad explained that the idea for The White Lotus Season 4 was not part of the original plan. The team had been looking at several other countries, but one dinner changed everything.
The moment was so perfect and so fitting for the showโs style that they knew right away where they needed to shoot. This choice now sets the stage for a season that will look at the world of art, fame, and the movie business during the most famous film festival on earth.
A Funny Dinner That Unlocked the Whole Season
While speaking at a festival event, David Bernad told the crowd about the exact moment the location clicked for him and show creator Mike White. They were having dinner in Cannes when they had a very specific, and very stereotypical, run-in with the restaurant staff.
โSomething happened, actually here in Cannes. We went to dinner and we had a really specific experience with a waiter and a maรฎtre dโ, and it was the stereotype. It was a very funny moment. And I think that it suddenly unlocked what the show is and the dynamics of the show.โ
He said the experience was so clear and funny that it instantly showed them the right path for the new episodes. The team did not waste any time after that dinner. They had been thinking about other places, but this moment made the decision very easy.
โWe literally canceled all the other places we were going,โ Bernad explained. โWe were like, okay, weโre shooting here.โ That quick choice set the stage for a season that will take viewers to the south of France during the height of movie star season.
Why Art and Fame Are the Main Topics of Season 4
The location is not just about pretty views. The idea of setting the show in Cannes fits perfectly with the theme Mike White had already started thinking about. Bernad shared that this season is focused on โthe arts and what it is to be an artist.โ There is no better place to explore that question than a city that hosts the worldโs biggest film festival.
Bernad also shared a personal reason for loving the location. He remembered coming to the festival when he was a younger producer. โIโll never forget coming here. It was the first time as a producer I felt people respected me,โ he said. โThereโs nowhere grander than the film festival for artists, itโs the biggest dream on Earth.โ He went on to say that the new episodes will look at the difficult side of being a creative person.
โItโs about the loneliness and pain of being an artist โ and how fame can be corrosive and can dictate your choices in life,โ Bernad revealed.
This makes the season sound like it will be very personal for the showโs creator. Bernad even called it Mike Whiteโs โmost personal seasonโ while also promising it is โthe funniest season as well.โ
