The story happened at the Canneseries Festival, where Bernad explained that the idea for The White Lotus Season 4 was not part of the original plan. The team had been looking at several other countries, but one dinner changed everything.

A Funny Dinner That Unlocked the Whole Season
While speaking at a festival event, David Bernad told the crowd about the exact moment the location clicked for him and show creator Mike White. They were having dinner in Cannes when they had a very specific, and very stereotypical, run-in with the restaurant staff.
“Something happened, actually here in Cannes. We went to dinner and we had a really specific experience with a waiter and a maître d’, and it was the stereotype. It was a very funny moment. And I think that it suddenly unlocked what the show is and the dynamics of the show.”
He said the experience was so clear and funny that it instantly showed them the right path for the new episodes. The team did not waste any time after that dinner. They had been thinking about other places, but this moment made the decision very easy.
“We literally canceled all the other places we were going,” Bernad explained. “We were like, okay, we’re shooting here.” That quick choice set the stage for a season that will take viewers to the south of France during the height of movie star season.
Why Art and Fame Are the Main Topics of Season 4
The location is not just about pretty views. The idea of setting the show in Cannes fits perfectly with the theme Mike White had already started thinking about. Bernad shared that this season is focused on “the arts and what it is to be an artist.” There is no better place to explore that question than a city that hosts the world’s biggest film festival.
Bernad also shared a personal reason for loving the location. He remembered coming to the festival when he was a younger producer. “I’ll never forget coming here. It was the first time as a producer I felt people respected me,” he said. “There’s nowhere grander than the film festival for artists, it’s the biggest dream on Earth.” He went on to say that the new episodes will look at the difficult side of being a creative person.
“It’s about the loneliness and pain of being an artist — and how fame can be corrosive and can dictate your choices in life,” Bernad revealed.
This makes the season sound like it will be very personal for the show’s creator. Bernad even called it Mike White’s “most personal season” while also promising it is “the funniest season as well.”

Production for The White Lotus Season 4 has already started. The crew is currently working at the Chateau de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez. As the story moves along the French Riviera, the team will also go to other famous spots. The official logline for the season states that the story will follow a new group of guests and hotel workers over one week, “taking place during the Cannes Film Festival.”

Even with that change, the remaining cast is packed with talent, including Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, Rosie Perez, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, and Parker Posey. The season is produced by Mike White, David Bernad, and Mark Kamine and will air on HBO and stream on Max.
