After a long wait, HBO has finally set the return date for its hit series House of the Dragon. The third season will officially premiere on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 9:00 PM ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max. The new season will have eight episodes, with new episodes arriving weekly. The season finale is scheduled for August 9, 2026.

Along with the release date, HBO dropped a new teaser trailer that gives fans a look at the intense action coming this summer. The teaser shows Emma D’Arcy as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen getting ready to fight for her claim to the Iron Throne. It also includes quick shots of battle scenes, fire, and dragons. The tagline for the teaser says, “There will be no doubt who the gods have chosen to rule”.

New Teaser and What to Expect in Season 3

The show is moving away from the political talk of earlier seasons and going straight into war. The third season picks up right after the ending of Season 2. A large naval battle that was teased at the end of the last season will be a major part of the early episodes.

Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen, talked about the direction of the new season at a fan event in Mexico City. He said the team is working to make this season bigger and more intense.

“This season, we’re trying to make it bigger, bolder, bloodier, more brutal, more dangerous — just get back to the nuts and bolts of what we are as a show,” Matt Smith said at CCXP Mexico.

Showrunner Ryan Condal also shared details about the production. He said they are putting the final touches on post-production in the United Kingdom. Condal called this the biggest season they have made so far.

“This is a huge season. It’s the biggest we’ve made by any margin and by a wide measure. It is dark. It’s funny. It’s action-packed. It’s emotional. And, of course, it has lots and lots of dragons,” Condal said.
