The creative team behind two popular manga series has come together for a brand new title. Robinson Haruhara, the writer of ‘Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess , and Taishi Tsutsui, the artist of We Never Learn: Bokuben , released the first chapter of their joint work Animal Signal on June 8, 2026.
The new manga appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #28 and received the cover spot with a 54-page opening chapter. The story combines animals, mystery, and comedy in a world where humans have developed special animal-like abilities.
What Is Animal Signal About?
Animal Signal takes place in a world where people have gained animal abilities called Anima. Some people have sensitive dog noses that can detect emotions. Others have frog skin that can predict the weather. These powers have become a normal part of daily life.
But where there are powers, there are also crimes. Criminals started using Anima to break the law. To fight back, the authorities created the Anima Control Center (also called the Anima Countermeasures Center).
The main character is Kokone, a female investigator who works at this center. Her special ability allows her to hear people’s thoughts. She gets paired with a new partner named Tsubasa to solve a case. The story follows their investigation at a zoo.
The official summary from Shueisha says: “In this world, animal abilities called Anima have manifested in humans. To deal with crimes committed using Anima, the Anima Control Center has been established. Investigator Kokone, who has the ability to read people’s thoughts, is on the case.”
Creators Bring Experience from Hit Series
This team-up brings together two creators with strong track records.
Robinson Haruhara wrote ‘Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess , a fantasy comedy manga that ran on Shonen Jump+ from April 2019 to August 2025. The series produced 19 volumes and received two anime seasons. The first anime season aired from January to March 2024. The second season aired from January to March 2026.
Taishi Tsutsui created We Never Learn: Bokuben , which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from February 2017 to December 2020. The romantic comedy series produced 21 volumes. An anime adaptation is also available on Crunchyroll.
This marks a return to Weekly Shonen Jump for both creators. For Tsutsui, it is his first work since his previous series ended. For Haruhara, it is his first serialization in the main Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.
Chapter One Details and Availability
The first chapter of Animal Signal runs 54 pages and includes color pages at the beginning. This is longer than a typical Weekly Shonen Jump chapter, which usually runs around 19 pages.
Readers can find Animal Signal in the following ways:
- Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #28 (on sale in Japan from June 8, 2026)
- Manga Plus app (English translation available)
- Shonen Jump app (for subscribers)
The manga is currently available in Japanese and English through digital platforms. Print copies of Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #28 are available in Japan.
Weekly Shonen Jump Lineup Changes
The launch of Animal Signal comes as Weekly Shonen Jump refreshes its lineup for summer 2026. The magazine recently ended Alien Headbutt on May 31, 2026 after only 16 chapters. Three new series are scheduled to debut in June to fill the open slots.
Animal Signal is the first of these new series to launch. Two more new manga will appear later in June 2026.
The popularity rankings for Issue #28 showed Someone Hertz in first place, followed by Sakamoto Days and Roku na Okashina Ie.
What Fans Can Expect Next
The second chapter of Animal Signal is scheduled for the next issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. It will run 25 pages and also include color pages.
The manga is described as a bishojo animal comedy. This means it combines cute girls with animal themes and humor. Given the creators’ backgrounds, readers can expect a mix of comedy and mystery elements.
Haruhara’s previous work ‘Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess focused on comedy with a princess who gives in to temptation too easily. Tsutsui’s We Never Learn: Bokuben centered on comedy and romance with a tutor helping two genius girls with their weak subjects.
Animal Signal appears to lean more into mystery and action while keeping the comedy elements both creators are known for.
