Netflix just dropped the first teaser for Scooby-Doo: Origins, and for the first time in 57 years, the beloved Great Dane is played by a real dog instead of a cartoon or CGI creation. The streaming service shared the 21-second clip on June 8, 2026, showing the mystery-solving puppy meeting a young Shaggy for the first time.

The teaser is shot from Scooby’s point of view. Viewers hear paws running and barking sounds as the dog sniffs around Camp Ruby-Spears. Then the camera pulls back to show a real Great Dane puppy wearing the signature teal-and-yellow collar being held by Tanner Hagen’s Shaggy Rogers. Frank Welker, who has voiced Scooby and Fred for more than five decades, returns to give the talking puppy his voice.

Full Cast Revealed for the Netflix Prequel Series

Scooby-Doo: Origins features a young cast taking on the classic roles. Mckenna Grace plays Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen plays Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson plays Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins plays Fred Jones. Paul Walter Hauser also joins the cast in an unknown role.

Grace previously voiced Daphne in the 2020 animated movie Scoob! . Fortson is known for her role in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret . Hagen appeared in The Pitt, and Jenkins starred in Lost in Space.

Linda Cardellini, who played Velma in the 2002 and 2004 live-action movies, told USA TODAY on June 1 that she looks forward to watching the Netflix show. Her advice for the new cast was to “have fun.”

Mixed Fan Reactions to the Real Dog Casting

Fans quickly flooded social media after the teaser dropped. Many loved seeing a real puppy play Scooby. One fan wrote:

“SCOOBY IS FINALLY REAL!!! Meet the goodest boy in Scooby-Doo: Origins, coming to Netflix in 2027.”

But some viewers expressed disappointment. Others argued the puppy does not look like the classic cartoon character. One fan responded:

“That is not Scooby Doo.”

Another wrote:

“Scooby Doo is supposed to be a Great Dane. Only idiots can mess up this badly.”

Some fans pointed out that a real dog cannot do the same funny disguises as the cartoon Scooby. One viewer noted that using a real dog removes the humor of Scooby pretending to be human, which has been a running joke for decades. Supporters of the casting said the series is a prequel showing Scooby as a puppy, so a real young dog makes sense for the story.

Plot Details for ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’

The eight-episode series serves as an origin story for Mystery Inc. The official logline says:

“During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie Velma and the strange but ever so handsome new kid Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”

Greg Berlanti, the producer behind shows like Arrow and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is developing the series. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg wrote the show. They previously worked together on Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop.

Netflix has not announced a specific release date. The series is scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix sometime in 2027. Viewers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, and other countries will be able to stream it when it releases.

This marks the first time a live-action Scooby-Doo television series has been made. Recent franchise entries include the 2020 animated movie Scoob! and the adult animated comedy Velma on Max, which ran for two seasons.
