The Insidious franchise returns with its sixth movie, Insidious: Out of the Further, and it brings a new family, new terrors, and a fresh direction for the long-running horror series. Director Jacob Chase takes over the franchise, moving away from the Lambert family story that anchored the first five films. Instead, the movie introduces Amelia Eve as Gemma, a single mother who discovers she has a dangerous connection to the supernatural realm known as The Further.
The film arrived in theaters on August 21, 2026, in the United States, United Kingdom, and India. It had earlier releases in Indonesia on August 19 and Australia on August 20. With a runtime of 106 minutes, the movie is now playing in cinemas worldwide.
A New Family Faces an Old Nightmare
The story follows Gemma (Amelia Eve), a dental hygienist and single mother raising her young daughter Maya (Island Austin) in the same Pittsburgh house where she grew up. The film opens with a flashback showing young Gemma witnessing her mother’s violent death, a trauma that has haunted her ever since. Gemma has spent years believing her mother was a neglectful drug addict, but the truth is far more terrifying.
Gemma soon discovers she possesses a unique ability. Unlike previous characters who could only enter The Further, Gemma is what the film calls a “Courier” – someone who can bring entities from the spirit realm back into the real world. This dangerous power makes her and her daughter targets for evil forces that want to use her gift to unleash chaos.
The movie introduces a trio of unsettling undead entities that begin lurking around Gemma’s neighborhood. Sam Spruell plays Cyrus, a cult-leader-type demon who serves as the main villain. Supporting characters include Brandon Perea as Nick, a sympathetic police officer and Gemma’s boyfriend, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Clare, a spiritually connected tattoo artist.
Lin Shaye Returns as Elise Rainier
Lin Shaye reprises her iconic role as psychic medium Elise Rainier, who continues to guide characters from beyond the grave. Even after death, Elise remains the franchise’s most charismatic connection to the supernatural world, wandering through The Further with her lantern and dispensing wisdom.
Shaye brings warmth and energy to the otherwise gloomy film. Her scenes provide some of the movie’s most welcome connections to what came before. One review notes that Shaye “remains one of the great constants of the franchise” and delivers a performance that fans will appreciate.
Critics Are Split on the New Direction
Insidious: Out of the Further has received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 68% approval rating from critics, making it the highest-rated entry in the entire franchise. It narrowly beats the original 2010 Insidious, which sits at 66%.
“It’s a captivating mix of clever scares and a heartbreaking emotional foundation. Insidious: Out of the Further emerges as one of the franchise’s best entries and one of 2026’s best surprises.” – Dread Central
“More than any other Insidious sequel to date, it provides us with a smart, fun spin on the series that’s once again not beholden to anything. It’s free to do as it pleases. The result is the best Insidious film since the original.” – io9 critic Germain Lussier
However, not all reviews have been positive. Some critics feel the franchise has run out of steam.
“Six films in and it’s officially time to bury this franchise because the Further isn’t scary anymore, just a dumping ground for bad ideas.” – Mashable
The Times of India gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars, calling it “an enjoyable and snackable horror drama with just enough spooky matter to keep it entertaining”. Variety India noted that while the film delivers “a few truly standout moments,” it struggles with “significant narrative problems” and “fails to evoke the eerie sense of unknown dread that characterized the original entry”.
What Makes This Entry Different
Insidious: Out of the Further stands out from previous installments in several ways. The film introduces the concept of a “Courier” – someone who can physically bring entities from The Further into the real world. This adds new stakes and possibilities that earlier movies never explored.
The horror in this installment is more direct and in-your-face compared to the slower-building dread of earlier films. Director Jacob Chase keeps the story simple and moves at a brisk pace, with barely a dull moment. The film doesn’t rely heavily on traditional jump scares, instead building suspense and creating the feeling that doom is always lurking just outside the frame.
One particularly memorable scene takes place in Gemma’s dental clinic. While treating an elderly patient, Gemma discovers a second set of razor-sharp fangs hidden beneath the patient’s teeth. The visceral body horror of this sequence has been called “among the most disturbing moments in the entire series”.
Another creative set piece involves Gemma crawling into her daughter’s pillow fort, only to discover it has become a massive, maze-like structure on the inside. The scene draws comparisons to the Backrooms horror aesthetic.
Box Office Expectations
Early box office projections suggest Insidious: Out of the Further could earn between $25 million and $35 million in its domestic opening weekend. This would put it in a similar range as Insidious: The Red Door, which opened with around $33 million in North America in 2023. The film faces competition from other major studio releases, but it remains one of the most anticipated horror titles of August 2026.
The Cast Delivers Strong Performances
Amelia Eve anchors the film with a commanding performance as Gemma. Critics have praised her ability to convey the character’s pain, fear, and determination to protect her daughter. Eve, known for her role in The Haunting of Bly Manor, brings emotional weight to the generational trauma at the heart of the story.
Brandon Perea (Nope) and Maisie Richardson-Sellers (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) provide solid support. Sam Spruell makes for an effective villain, though some critics feel his character lacks the memorability of earlier Insidious demons like the Lipstick-Faced Demon.
Young Island Austin plays Maya, Gemma’s daughter, and Charli Penton appears in the opening prologue as young Gemma.
