Warner Bros. has launched a major Oscars campaign for James Gunn‘s 2025 film “Superman,” submitting the blockbuster for consideration in multiple major categories. This marks the first significant awards push for a Superman film in over four decades, signaling the studio’s strong confidence in the DC Universe reboot.
The Full Awards Campaign List
The studio’s “For Your Consideration” campaign positions the film across sixteen competitive categories. The push includes some of the Academy’s most prestigious honors, aiming to recognize both the creative talent in front of and behind the camera.
The campaign highlights David Corenswet for Best Actor in the title role. For Best Supporting Actress, the film is backing both Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Isabela Merced. The supporting actor submissions include Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and Nathan Fillion. Behind the scenes, director James Gunn is submitted for both Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, while he and producer Peter Safran are recognized for Best Picture.
The technical category submissions are comprehensive. They include Best Cinematography (Henry Braham), Best Visual Effects (supervised by Stephane Ceretti, Enrico Damm, Stephane Naze, and Guy Williams), and Best Costume Design (Judianna Makovsky). The film is also entered for Best Original Score (John Murphy and David Fleming) and Best Original Song for “The Mighty Crabjoy’s Theme,” written by Gunn, Eric Nally, and Devin Williams. Additional technical submissions cover Best Casting, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Make-Up and Hairstyling, and Best Sound.
A Historic Opportunity for Superman
This Oscars campaign represents a potential historic moment for the Superman franchise. If the film secures a nomination, it will be the first time a Superman movie has been recognized by the Academy since the 1979 film starring Christopher Reeve.
That film was nominated in three technical categories: Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Sound. The last time any Superman film competed for an Oscar was 46 years ago, making this a significant milestone for the iconic character. The 2025 “Superman” film has been described as a story that focuses on the hero’s struggle to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing in Kansas, all while upholding kindness in a cynical world.
A Strong Contender in a Competitive Year
The film enters the awards season from a position of commercial and critical strength. “Superman” was a box office success, earning over $615 million globally and becoming the highest-grossing superhero film of its release year. It also received positive reviews from critics and fans, who praised its fresh tone and David Corenswet’s performance as the Man of Steel.
Warner Bros. has scheduled multiple screenings for Academy voters in November and December to bolster the film’s campaign. These screenings will be held in key cities including Los Angeles and New York, with one event planned for December 25 at the Directors Guild of America. The studio has also submitted other films for consideration, including “Mickey-17,” “Sinners,” “Weapons,” “One Battle After Another,” and “A Minecraft Movie.”
“Iโm incredibly grateful for your enthusiasm and kind words over the past few days,” Gunn said of the response to Superman. “Weโve had a lot of ‘Super’ in Superman over the years, and Iโm happy to have made a movie that focuses on the ‘man’ part of the equation โ a kind person always looking out for those in need.”
While the genre of superhero films often finds more recognition in technical categories, the extensive scope of this campaign shows Warner Bros.’ ambition to position “Superman” as a top-tier contender across the board. The outcome will be determined when the Academy Award nominations are officially announced.
