The Witcher season four dropped on Netflix on October 30, 2025, leaving its main characters more broken and scattered than ever before. The season ended with a series of stunning cliffhangers for Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, pushing the story into its final chapter. With the fifth and final season already filmed, here are the biggest questions fans need answered when the show returns.
Trigger Warning: This article discusses themes of violence and captivity.
Yennefer’s Dangerous Gamble
The last time viewers saw Yennefer, she had stepped into a dark portal, determined to track down and kill the powerful mage Vilgefortz. She was transported into the middle of a violent ocean storm and sucked into a whirlpool. Her fellow sorceress, Triss, had warned her that using the portal could leave her in a place Vilgefortz knows well and she does not.
Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich explained, “She knows that Vilgefortz is a huge danger to Ciri, and she takes that mission on, but she canโt do it on her own.”
Now, the question is whether Yennefer’s gamble was a fatal mistake or a brave move that destiny required. She is the only mage who fully understands the threat Vilgefortz poses, and her loss would be a major blow to the resistance against him.
Ciri’s Captivity and Dark Path
Ciri ended season four in a dire situation. After joining a gang of young thieves called the Rats and taking on the new identity Falka, she was tracked down by the ruthless bounty hunter Leo Bonhart. He slaughtered her entire gang, including her lover Mistle, and took her captive.
The season ended with Ciri restrained and forced to watch as Bonhart decapitated Mistle. She is now a prisoner, having lost the last bit of her childhood and fully embraced violence. Her biological father, Emperor Emhyr, wants to marry her to fulfill an ancient prophecy and solidify his power.
The central question for season five is whether Ciri will shed her Falka persona and fight back against her father’s plan, or if she will fully weaponize her darker side.
Freya Allan, who plays Ciri, said about her character’s captor, “Working with Sharlto [Copley], for me, has been one of the biggest joys of the whole Witcher experience because he is a bloody brilliant actorโฆ he genuinely is a flawless Leo Bonhart.”
Geralt’s Gilded Cage
In a bittersweet turn of events, Geralt finally achieved his childhood dream of becoming a real knight. After helping Queen Meve win the Battle of the Bridge, she officially knighted him as Geralt of Rivia. However, the honor immediately turned into a trap when the Queen declared he was now bound to serve her and only her.
Geralt’s reaction was a simple, defeated “Fuck.” His dream has come true, but his priorities have changed. He wants his family more than any title, and this knighthood now stands in the way of his search for Ciri.
The final season needs to show whether Geralt will honor his duty to the crown or throw away his title to go rogue and find his daughter.
The New Lodge of Sorceresses
Before her dangerous departure, Yennefer successfully united a group of powerful sorceresses. She spoke to them about forming a new Lodge of Sorceresses, aiming to protect magic on the Continent and create a safer world for Ciri.
With Yennefer now missing, the stability of this new group is in question. Season five needs to reveal if the Lodge can truly rise above old power games and work together, or if it will fall apart without its leader. Their primary reason for existing is to protect Ciri, and they will need to prove they are more than just a political club.
The Thread of Destiny
The core of The Witcher has always been the destined connection between Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer. Season four tore them apart, leaving them broken, traumatized, and on separate paths across the Continent.
Season five is the final contract for this found family. It has the heavy responsibility of bringing them back together or showing how destiny ultimately destroys them. Every fan is waiting to see if their bond is strong enough to overcome the pain and bring them home.
The Future of the Hansa
Geralt did not spend season four alone. He was joined by a ragtag group of allies often called his hansa. This crew includes the bard Jaskier, the archer Milva, the dwarf Zoltan, the higher vampire Regis, and the Nilfgaardian turncoat Cahir.
With Geralt now sworn to Queen Meve, his companions are also bound to this new service. The final season will explore how this group, which has become a new found family for Geralt, handles being tied to a political cause when their goal was to find Ciri.
Emhyr’s Mysterious Monster
In the final moments of the season, Ciri’s father, Emhyr, was shown with a terrifying new weapon. His mage advisor presented him with a “magnificent specimen,” described as the largest and most brutish monster he had ever seen.
In a chilling scene, Emhyr used Renfri’s broochโa item Geralt kept as a reminder of his past failuresโto give the creature Geralt’s scent. He then ordered it to track down and eliminate the Witcher, who stands between him and his daughter. This monster is hinted to be a threat beyond anything Geralt has faced before.
The Storytellers’ Role
Season four introduced a narrative frame set one hundred years in the future. A storyteller named Stribog tells tales of Geralt of Rivia to children, including a young girl named Nimue.
In the finale, a grown-up Nimue tells Stribog she feels a deep connection to Ciri and is leaving to study magic at Aretuza. Stribog gifts her his copy of Half a Century of Poetry by Jaskier and tells her, “How this saga ends may depend on you.”
Their story suggests that the tales of Geralt and Ciri have lasting power and that Nimue herself will play a part in the legend, a thread that season five will likely explore.
The Fate of Vilgefortz
The villainous mage Vilgefortz remains a pervasive threat. While he was weakened after the Battle of Montecalvo, he is still powerful and cunning. The finale showed him in his fortress at Stygga, harvesting the eyes and tongues of his underlings to prepare for a powerful spell.
He was waiting for Yennefer, expecting her arrival through the portal. With Yennefer walking into his trap, season five will be the ultimate showdown between them.
Leo Bonhart’s True Motives
The bounty hunter Leo Bonhart was hired by Nilfgaard to capture Ciri alive. However, he is a notoriously unpredictable and cruel character. He takes pleasure in violence and keeps the severed heads of his victims as trophies.
While his orders are to deliver Ciri to her father, his own twisted nature makes his next moves uncertain. He now has the Lion Cub of Cintra in his custody, and season five will reveal what he plans to do with her.
The Prophecy of the Lady of the Lake
The book of poetry by Jaskier that Nimue cherishes contains a drawing labeled “Cirilla and the Lady of the Lake.” The grown-up Nimue believes that she is the Lady of the Lake depicted in the drawing, hinting that she is destined to be part of Ciri’s story.
This prophecy and the connection between these two women across time is a major plot point from the books that the final season needs to address to bring the saga to a close.
