Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming adaptation of the blockbuster video game God of War has just received a massive vote of confidence. The streaming service has officially renewed the show for a second season before production has even begun on the first, indicating a major commitment to the project. The series is based on the acclaimed 2018 game and is rapidly moving forward with key creative hires and casting now underway.

A Major Creative Team Is In Place

The development of the God of War TV series is picking up serious momentum. The show has secured Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy-winning director, to lead the first two episodes. Toye is a seasoned veteran of major streaming productions, having directed episodes of acclaimed series like Shลgun (for which he won an Emmy), The Boys, Fallout, and The Terminal List. His role is crucial for establishing the visual style and tone for the entire series.

Leading the project as showrunner, writer, and executive producer is Ronald D. Moore, the creative mind behind celebrated series such as Battlestar Galactica and Outlander. Moore took over the project in late 2024 after a creative overhaul, replacing the original showrunner. He is now actively working with a team of writers in what is known as the “scripts phase” of development.

Moore has expressed great enthusiasm for the source material, stating in a recent interview:

โ€œI’ve never done an adaptation of a video game, and the deeper I got into it, the more impressed I was with the breadth and the depth of the mythology that’s involved in this video game.โ€

โ€œThis world and this universe are really richโ€ฆ It’s an adaptation-slash-interpretation as you go into live-action, and it’s been really fun to sort of go, ‘Wow, there’s a lot here we can play with.’โ€

Amazon’s Strong Commitment With A Two-Season Order

The early renewal for Season 2 is a significant move that signals Amazon’s strong belief in the project. This two-season order was reportedly approved earlier in 2025 and allows the creative team to plan a longer story arc without the pressure of cramming the game’s narrative into a single season. For a series with the expected scale of God of War, involving extensive world-building, costumes, sets, and visual effects, securing multiple seasons upfront helps manage large production costs more effectively.

This strategy is not entirely new for Amazon, especially following the success of their other major video game adaptation, Fallout. The early renewal reduces the risk of the story being cut short and gives the writers more freedom to develop characters and plotlines over time.

The Story And Production Timeline

The TV series will adapt the story from the 2018 God of War game, which shifted the setting from Greek to Norse mythology. The story follows the Spartan warrior Kratos, now older and living in the realm of Midgard, and his young son, Atreus. After the death of Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother, Faye, the pair begin a perilous journey to honor her final wish: to spread her ashes from the highest peak in the Nine Realms.

The official logline describes the core of the story: โ€œ’God of War’ follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.โ€

The series is currently in pre-production in Vancouver, Canada, and the casting process for the lead roles of Kratos and Atreus has officially begun. While there is much fan speculation online about who might play Kratos, no official casting announcements have been made. Filming is currently scheduled to begin in March 2026.

Given the expected year-long filming schedule and the extensive post-production work required for visual effects, industry estimates suggest the series will likely premiere on Prime Video in late 2027 or early 2028. The first season is planned to have 10 episodes.

The People Behind The Scenes

The project is a major collaboration between several powerhouse studios. It is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s own Tall Ship Productions. This ensures a close connection to the original game’s creators.

Significantly, Cory Barlog, the creative director and writer of the 2018 God of War game, is serving as an executive producer on the series. Moore has praised Barlog’s deep involvement, calling him a “genius” for his comprehensive knowledge of the game’s world and mythology. Other executive producers include Maril Davis, Naren Shankar, and Matthew Graham.
