The showโs chaotic move to a deserted mall has pushed the newest member of the Abbott staff to his breaking point, setting the stage for the showโs first major teacher departure.
In the January 7 midseason premiere of Abbott Elementary, the teachers are not in their familiar classrooms. A broken boiler has flooded Willard R. Abbott Elementary School, forcing the entire staff and student body into a temporary new home: an abandoned shopping mall. For most of the teachers, this is another chaotic hurdle to overcome. But for the newest faculty member, fourth-grade teacher Dominic Clark, played by actor Luke Tennie, the disorienting move appears to be the final straw, strongly hinting that his time at Abbott may be ending soon.
The episode, titled “Mall”, shows the teachers trying to transform empty, vandalized storefronts into functioning classrooms. While Janine attempts to maintain her signature optimism, Dominic struggles profoundly. He cannot control his students in the wide-open, echoey space and becomes visibly defeated by the decaying environment. At one low point, he openly talks about giving up.
The Emotional Weight Of A Potential Goodbye
Dominic Clark was introduced at the very start of Season 5 as a former student of Barbara Howard, now returning to Abbott as a colleague. Despite his short time on the show, he has quickly connected with two central characters. Janine reluctantly took him on as her protรฉgรฉ, and in the “Mall” episode, Gregory steps in to mentor him through his struggles. This dual mentorship means a potential exit would hit Janine and Gregory the hardest, challenging their roles as guides and forcing them to confront the limits of their positive influence.
Gregoryโs conversation with Dominic adds a layer of real-world gravity to the situation. He notes that the public education system is known for burning out young teachers quickly due to chronic problems like underfunding. This framing suggests that if Dominic leaves, it would not be a simple personal failure but a reflection of larger, systemic issues the show has always satirized.
Behind The Scenes Of The Ambitious Mall Storyline
The mall setting is not just a fictional comedy scenario. Show creator Quinta Brunson was inspired by real events, specifically students and teachers from Palisades High School in Los Angeles who relocated to a vacant Sears store after their school was damaged by wildfires. The showโs writers spoke with administrators who lived through that experience to ground the story in reality.
“She was like, โI want to talk about the reality that these educators go through and have us put our characters through the same thing,โ” said showrunner Justin Halpern, describing Brunsonโs inspiration for the plot.
Filming the multi-episode arc was a massive production challenge. The crew took over a genuinely abandoned mall in Topanga, California, which was slated for demolition. Producers had to coordinate moving the entire cast and crew to the location for over a month, managing complex logistics and significant costs.
What Dominic’s Story Means For Abbott Elementary
Until now, Abbott Elementary has maintained a warm, resilient core. Despite the daily struggles, the teachers have always persevered together. Dominic Clark’s potential exit would mark a first for the seriesโa genuine casualty of the systemic pressures it often highlights. It would introduce a note of poignant realism, showing that even a supportive community like Abbott’s cannot always overcome the immense stresses of teaching in an under-resourced district.
For the characters, it serves as a potential growth point. With Janine and Gregoryโs relationship now stable and happy, Dominicโs struggles offer a new type of conflict for them to face as a couple, testing their maturity as mentors rather than creating romantic drama.
