The second episode of Netflix’s His & Hers pulls back the curtain on the tangled lives of its central characters, making both lead suspects look more guilty. While Detective Jack Harper scrambles to hide his affair with the victim, journalist Anna Andrews confronts a bitter enemy from her past, uncovering talk of a dangerous twenty-year-old secret.
The episode, which is now streaming, reveals that the friendship between Anna, the victim Rachel Hopkins, and others was built on cruelty and class division. As Jack takes extreme steps to cover his tracks, including a shocking act in the morgue, new suspects emerge and the list of people who could have wanted Rachel dead grows longer.
Key Events and Revelations in Episode 2
The episode picks up with tension high after Anna revealed the victim’s identity on the news. An angry Jack confronts her at her hotel, accusing her of selfishly blowing the case open for a story. Their fight exposes their fractured marriage, with Jack hinting he might have remained faithful if Anna hadn’t left, though they agree to an uneasy truce.
Jack and his partner, Priya Patel, then interview Rachel’s husband, Clyde “Duffie” Hopkins. Duffie is strangely open, explaining he and Rachel had an open marriage due to his impotence. He describes Rachel as someone who enjoyed sexual encounters with strangers, particularly in vehicles, and took pleasure in belittling them. He suggests one of these partners may have finally snapped, a theory Priya finds plausible.
Duffie shows security footage of Rachel leaving their house on a call the night she died, followed by him walking the dog, providing an alibi. He also reveals Anna visited him earlier that morning, and he told her that Rachel’s best friend, Helen Wang, might know about Rachel’s secret lover.
Jack Harper’s Suspicious Behavior and Cover-Up
Jack’s actions become increasingly questionable throughout the episode, clearly focused on concealing his own involvement rather than solving the crime. After leaving Duffie’s, he makes a critical discovery: Rachel’s phone is in his truck. Duffie has been calling it repeatedly to drain the battery, despite police warnings. Jack hides the phone from Priya.
He continues to avoid giving his DNA sample to the medical examiner, knowing it will match evidence from the crime scene. Instead, he goes home and deceptively collects a DNA swab from his niece, Meg, intending to submit it as his own. He also cancels the trace ordered on Rachel’s phone.
His most drastic move comes at the morgue. After submitting the fake DNA sample, Jack pretends to search for a lost wedding ring. When the attendant is distracted, he uses Rachel’s corpse to unlock her phone via Face ID. He immediately deletes their entire text thread, which included explicit photos. While in her messages, he finds texts between Rachel and Helen discussing someone they are blackmailing, referred to as “C.” He also learns that Helen knew all about his affair with Rachel.
Anna Andrews Confronts a Bully from Her Past
While Jack works to cover his tracks, Anna drives to St. Hilary’s, the private girls’ school they all attended. A flashback reveals Anna’s first day there on a scholarship. Her mother, Alice, who worked as a cleaner for Rachel’s family, asks a teenage Rachel to look out for Anna. Rachel, Zoe, and Helen smile to her face but mock her behind her back, establishing a history of bullying and social cruelty.
In the present, Anna meets with Helen, now the headmistress. Their interaction is venomous. Helen calls Anna a “parasitic stirrer of sh*t” and refuses to go on record about Jack and Rachel. She cruelly taunts Anna by bringing up the loss of her child.
Most ominously, Helen alludes to a dark secret from twenty years ago that only five people knew. With Rachel dead, Helen notes, only four remain who know the truth. Anna sharply replies that Rachel, who knew the secret, is now dead.
New Clues and Mounting Suspicion
As the episode unfolds, new pieces of evidence come to light, tightening the net around various characters. Priya, growing increasingly suspicious of Jack’s erratic behavior, complies with his orders to pull Duffie’s phone records. She discovers he did continue calling Rachel’s phone after being told not to.
Separately, while reviewing crime scene photos, Priya finds a clear boot print near where Rachel’s body was discovered. Viewers are shown that the tread matches Jack’s own Timberland boots, though Priya has not made this connection yet.
The episode also fills in more personal history. We learn Anna and Jack lost a young daughter, which is why Anna disappeared for a year and why their marriage is broken. Anna visits her mother, Alice, who is suffering from dementia. In a poignant moment, Alice serves Anna scrambled eggs with the shells still in them, highlighting her deteriorating condition.
Anna is pulled away when her boss, Jim, calls reporting that her rival anchor Lexy is missing; he asks Anna to return to Atlanta to host the evening news.

The Episode’s Final Moments and Unanswered Questions
The concluding scenes of Episode 2 heighten the mystery. After Jack reads the incriminating texts on Rachel’s phone, he is shaken to learn Helen knew about his affair. The final shot shows Helen in her office at St. Hilary’s, late at night. She picks up the phone and calls the police station, but instead of asking for Jack, she requests to speak to Sheriff Barnes.
This cliffhanger, combined with the earlier reveal of the twenty-year secret and the blackmail scheme, leaves major questions. Who is “C” that Rachel and Helen were blackmailing? What is the terrible secret from high school? Is Duffie’s alibi as solid as it seems? With Lexy now missing as well, the town’s mysteries are only deepening.
