Angelo’s double life starts to crumble in the second episode of Fox’s new thriller, “Memory of a Killer.” The hitman, played by Patrick Dempsey, gets a major clue in his search for who attacked his daughter, but his own mistakes might expose him first. The episode, titled “Ferryman,” aired on Monday, January 26, 2026.

This episode shows Angelo Ledda trying to protect his family after a sniper targeted his pregnant daughter, Maria, in the premiere. While the FBI investigates, Angelo uses his dangerous skills to look into the crime on his own. He learns that the attack was ordered by someone called the “Ferryman.” At the same time, a simple mistake with a piece of evidence starts to pull down the wall between his life as a loving father and his secret job as a killer.

The Investigation Begins: FBI Questions and a Dangerous Name

After the shooting, FBI Agent Linda Grant, played by Gina Torres, questions Angelo about the event. She finds his reaction suspicious. Why would a photocopier salesman run directly toward a sniper? Angelo explains it away with his past military service for his daughter’s benefit, but Grant is not convinced.

At the same time, Angelo warns Maria that the man responsible for her mother’s death, Earl Hancock, has been released from prison early. Angelo believes Hancock might be connected to the shooting. He watches from behind a glass as the police bring Hancock in for questioning. While Hancock seems to have a solid alibi for the attack, he mentions a key name during the interview: “The Ferryman.”.

This name becomes Angelo’s only real clue. He learns from other sources that the Ferryman was indeed the person who hired the sniper to target Maria. For Angelo, this changes the mission. He is no longer just responding to a threat. He must actively hunt down this mysterious figure to keep his daughter safe.

A Costly Mistake: Maria Finds a Clue

While hunting the Ferryman, Angelo makes a critical error that brings his two worlds crashing closer together. He accidentally leaves a news clipping about one of his professional targets in the pocket of a jacket. His daughter Maria finds it.

Maria does not immediately confront her father about the strange clipping. She simply returns the jacket to him. However, Angelo discovers the clipping back in the pocket, realizing she must have seen it. This moment is a major turning point. For years, Angelo has perfectly kept his life as a hitman separate from his life as a father. This single piece of paper threatens to destroy that balance.

Showrunner Aaron Zelman discussed this tense moment. He said the show’s creators like to let characters keep secrets from each other and let the audience figure out what they know. “You’ve got a pretty big liar, a guy who leads a double life,” Zelman said. He hinted that Maria might also be good at hiding things, asking if she is “a chip off the old block a little bit”. This suggests Maria may start her own investigation into her father’s secrets.

Who Is the Ferryman? A Compelling Mystery

The central mystery of the episode, and likely the season, is the identity of the Ferryman. The name is a direct reference to Charon, the ferryman of the underworld in Greek mythology who carries souls to the afterlife. This implies the person using this name sees themselves as a guide to death for their enemies.

When asked about the Ferryman, showrunner Aaron Zelman confirmed the mythological connection was intentional. “That is definitely something that will be explored and explained. Let’s just say that was a good instinct,” he told an interviewer. He teased that the reveal of who the Ferryman is will be “surprising” and will drive interest through the whole season. The show invites viewers to play a “guessing game” about which character it could be.

Some fans are already speculating that it could be someone close to Angelo, like his friend and handler, Dutch, played by Michael Imperioli. The episode deepens their complicated relationship, showing them as genuine friends who also have serious trust issues.

Angelo’s Worsening Condition and FBI Pressure

Angelo’s early-onset Alzheimer’s continues to be a hidden threat. The episode shows him struggling to maintain his focus while under pressure from both the FBI and his criminal employer. Agent Linda Grant’s interest in him adds a dangerous new layer. She represents a legal threat that Angelo cannot simply eliminate.

Zelman described Grant’s interest as more than just a cop’s intuition. “She certainly seems to be… interested in him in a way that suggests she does have her own agenda,” he said. He promised that Grant will continue to be “a thorn in his side” as the season continues.

The FBI agent also shares that she knows what it is like to lose someone suddenly. This personal comment could be a tactic to bond with Angelo, or it could hint at a deeper, unknown connection between them. The showrunner would not confirm if she was referring to a potential victim of Angelo’s, leaving it as another mystery.

Key Character Dynamics and Future Threats

The episode further develops the relationships that will define the season:

  • Angelo and Dutch: Their friendship is shown in a scene outside Dutch’s restaurant, where they laugh and joke before a surprise party. This normal moment contrasts sharply with their violent business. Zelman confirmed this friendship is a core part of the show and that we will see more casual moments between them. However, their trust is fragile.
  • Angelo and Joe: Angelo is forced to work with Joe, a younger, less competent associate played by Richard Harmon. Joe’s mistakes and dishonesty about them create tension. Zelman described it as a classic mentor-protege relationship where it is unclear if the student will ever master the skills needed.
  • Maria and Dave: Maria’s husband, Dave, comforts her in the hospital, strengthening their bond during the crisis. This normal, loving relationship stands in stark contrast to the violence surrounding Angelo.

By the end of the episode, Angelo knows the Ferryman is real and is coming for his family. His daughter may be starting to doubt who he really is. The walls between his two lives are cracking, and his declining memory makes it harder to keep up the act. The hunt for the Ferryman is now a race against time, his own mind, and the FBI.
