The second season of Prime Video‘s hit crime drama Cross came to a close on March 18, 2026, leaving fans with major questions about the future of Aldis Hodge‘s iconic detective. Just one day after the finale dropped, the streaming service confirmed what many hoped forโ€”the show is returning for a third season. But the path forward for Alex Cross looks very different after the events of the Season 2 finale.

The final episode, titled “Quemar,” saw Cross make a life-changing decision. After spending the season hunting a vigilante killer and exposing a massive human trafficking ring run by billionaire Lance Durand (Matthew Lillard), the detective witnessed firsthand how deeply corruption runs within the system. Despite gathering solid evidence against Durand, federal authorities moved to cover up the crime to protect powerful people. This betrayal pushed Cross to his breaking point.

Amazon MGM Studios officially renewed Cross for an eight-episode third season on March 18, 2026. The new season will continue streaming exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries worldwide.

Creator Ben Watkins Explains How the Finale Was Always Leading to Season 3

Series creator Ben Watkins recently opened up about his long-term vision for the show and how the Season 2 ending connects to what comes next. In interviews following the finale, Watkins revealed that he originally planned a different conclusion but changed course as the story developed naturally.

“I already had a four-year plan. We want this thing to go for 10 seasons, but in my head, I had already made a four-year plan, and it’s based on some things that I want to do to mine and pay homage to the characters that are in the Alex Cross book series.”

The creator explained his approach to building long-running television. He treats every season as part of a larger picture, even when renewal isn’t guaranteed. This philosophy led him to plant seeds in Season 1 that paid off in Season 2, while also setting up storylines that will only fully develop in Season 3.

Regarding the major changes in the finale, Watkins admitted he had second thoughts about some creative decisions. “Both of those things were not planned. I actually was going to have Luz die, and I was going to have Cross stay on the force. But it’s a perfect example of once a story starts to take on a life of its own.”

Alex Cross Quits the Force: What It Means for Season 3

The biggest shift heading into Season 3 is Alex Cross‘s decision to turn in his badge. After watching the FBI attempt to cover up Lance Durand‘s crimesโ€”including child trafficking and murderโ€”Cross lost faith in the institution he served for years.

Aldis Hodge, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, shared his thoughts on this major character moment. “I think Cross made an intentional choice, not necessarily to give up, but to walk away from a system that he could not fix. He still, in his mind, represents what he thinks justice is. He’s going to find a different route to represent said justice.”

Hodge expanded on what drives his character’s decision. “But I think we shed light on the truth of, ‘What is justice?’ It is not what is sold to us. Justice is sometimes not even found in law. Sometimes the measure of equality has to be met by changing laws. For any means of equality to be met, laws have to be changed.”

This departure from the police force opens up new storytelling possibilities for Season 3. In James Patterson‘s original book series, Alex Cross eventually leaves the Washington, D.C. police department and moves into private psychology practice. He later works with the FBI and returns as a special consultant. The show appears to be following this path, giving viewers a fresh take on the beloved character.

Watkins addressed how the show will handle Cross’s new status. “There’s a difference between justice and the law, and if the law is not upholding justice, and you are the law, then what does that make you? When we go into Season 3, he’s going to still deal with that question because the institution is still there, but we also have to have a very compelling way to get him back. You know how it is with a hero; they take their cap off, but there’s always something that makes them put the cape back on, and that creates an opportunity for us.”

The Mystery of Luz: Did She Survive?

The Season 2 finale left another major question hanging. Jeanine Mason‘s character Luz, the vigilante killer who spent the season hunting human traffickers, appeared to jump to her death from a bridge rather than face arrest. But the final moments of the episode showed a woman with a distinctive back tattooโ€”identical to Luz’sโ€”walking through a crowd in a Mexican village.

Watkins confirmed what sharp-eyed viewers suspected. “She did live. She did live. I don’t know when, but there’s a reason we kept her alive.”

For her part, Mason is ready to return whenever the call comes. “Tell Ben, I’m in,” she joked when asked about her character’s possible future on the show.

The actress previously discussed the challenge of making audiences sympathize with a serial killer. Creator Ben Watkins gave her specific direction for the role. “I want you to do the most. I want you to make them fall in love with you and then proceed to do the most horrendous things and see if you can keep them on your side.”

The character’s survival opens up intriguing possibilities for Season 3. With Alex Cross no longer bound by police procedures, a future meeting between the former detective and the woman he once hunted could take unexpected turns. Their shared goal of bringing real criminals to justice might even make them unlikely allies.

Returning Cast and What to Expect in Season 3

Prime Video has confirmed that most of the core cast will return for Season 3. Aldis Hodge leads the way as Alex Cross, with Isaiah Mustafa back as his partner John Sampson. The extended Cross familyโ€”Juanita Jennings as Nana Mama, Caleb Elijah as Damon Cross, and Melody Hurd as Janelle Crossโ€”will also return.

Other familiar faces include Alona Tal as FBI Agent Kayla Craig, Samantha Walkes as Elle Monteiro, Johnny Ray Gill as Bobby Trey, and Matthew Lillard as the imprisoned Lance Durand. Newer additions Jeanine Mason and Wes Chatham are also expected back.

Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, shared his excitement about the renewal. “From the beginning, ‘Cross’ has captivated audiences with its layered characters, pulse-pounding suspense, and emotionally grounded storytelling. Aldis has delivered a definitive portrayal of Alex Cross, anchoring the series with depth, intelligence, and heart. We’re thrilled to continue this journey with Ben, our partners at Paramount Television Studios, and the rest of the incredible cast to bring even more of James Patterson’s iconic world to our global Prime Video audience.”

The show’s success isn’t just measured in viewership. The first season attracted 40 million viewers worldwide in its first 20 days, making it the third-most-watched premiere on the platform in 2025. It reached the number one spot in over 100 countries.

Critical recognition has followed as well. Cross won Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards. Aldis Hodge took home Best Performance in a Drama Series at the 2025 NAMIC Vision Awards.

Season 2 Streaming Details and Performance

For viewers just catching up, Cross Season 2 debuted on February 11, 2026, with its first three episodes. The remaining five episodes followed weekly, with the finale arriving on March 18, 2026โ€”the same day the Season 3 renewal was announced.

The eight-episode season follows Alex Cross as he pursues a vigilante targeting corrupt billionaire magnates. New cast members Matthew Lillard, Jeanine Mason, and Wes Chatham joined the show for its second outing.

Critical reception for Season 2 has been strong. The season holds a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 19 reviews, showing improvement over the first season’s 76% score.

The show has also performed well in traditional ratings. Cross ranked among Nielsen’s top 10 original series during its second season premiere week, proving its appeal extends beyond streaming metrics.

Watkins continues to think ahead about the series’ future. In addition to his four-year plan, he has even bigger dreams. “We want this thing to go for 10 seasons, but in my head, I had already made a four-year plan.”

When asked about a possible on-screen appearance from James Patterson himself, the author was modest but open to the idea. “There’s no need for some old guy in it,” Patterson joked, before adding, “Yeah, sure. Yeah, I would do it. Of course.”

All episodes of Cross Season 1 and Season 2 are currently streaming on Prime Video. A release date for Season 3 has not yet been announced.
