The body-swap court drama Though I Am an Inept Villainess is officially set for a July 2026 premiere, following a production delay from its original April schedule. The anime adaptation of Satsuki Nakamura’s popular light novel series released its first full promotional video on March 18, 2026, giving viewers a detailed look at the animation and adding four new voice actors to the lineup.
New Trailer Reveals Extended Cast and Production Details
The main promotional video, released on the TOHO animation YouTube channel, provides a deeper look into the series’ setting—the imperial court of the Kingdom of Ei. The footage showcases the stark contrast between the two lead characters and the dramatic consequences of their body swap.
Animation studio Doga Kobo (Oshi no Ko, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun) is handling production. The trailer confirms the addition of four new cast members:
- Makoto Furukawa as Ei Gyomei
- Yuichiro Umehara as Shin-u
- Hana Hishikawa as Lily
- Nikray Farahnaz as Kou Tousetsu
These actors join the previously announced lead voice cast: Manaka Iwami (The Apotheary Diaries, Fruits Basket) as Kou Reirin and Natsumi Kawaida (The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You) as Shu Keigetsu.
Why the Anime Was Delayed to July 2026
The series was originally scheduled to debut in April 2026. In early February, the production committee announced a delay, citing production schedule issues. The official website and social media accounts shared the news, apologizing to fans waiting for the adaptation. The team confirmed the new July broadcast window on TV Tokyo and affiliated channels.
The Story Behind the Body Swap
Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court takes place in a kingdom inspired by historical China. Five noble clans send their daughters to the imperial court, where one will eventually become empress.
Kou Reirin is called the “court butterfly”—beautiful, graceful, and the clear favorite to marry the crown prince. Her only flaw is her weak, sickly body. Shu Keigetsu, known as the “court rat,” lives in Reirin’s shadow, despised for her harsh words and jealous behavior.
During a lantern festival, Keigetsu attacks Reirin. But when Reirin wakes up, she is in the dungeons—trapped inside Keigetsu’s body. Keigetsu has used forbidden magic to swap their bodies, hoping to steal Reirin’s life and position.
The twist? Reirin finds her new body stronger and healthier than her original one. Instead of giving up, she decides to use this unexpected change to survive, even with an execution order hanging over her head.
The Creative Team Behind the Series
Director Mitsue Yamazaki (How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?, Zenshu) leads the project at Doga Kobo. Yoshiko Nakamura handles series composition, while Ai Kikuchi designs the characters.
The newly announced staff for the July premiere includes:
- Kei Ishiguro as color key artist
- Seina Yaguchi as art director
- Yui Fukuoka as director of photography
- Yukari Hashimoto composing the music
Where to Watch the Series
The anime will air on TV Tokyo and its affiliated networks across Japan starting in July 2026. International streaming details have not been announced yet, but given the popularity of the source material and Doga Kobo’s track record, global platforms are expected to pick up the series closer to the debut date.
