The connection comes down to a single character from Wilson Fisk’s world appearing in the Spider-Man film. Sheila Rivera, who served as Kingpin’s campaign manager and senior advisor in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, shows up in the Brand New Day trailer presenting Spider-Man with a ceremonial key to the city.

For viewers who watched the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, Sheila Rivera is a familiar face. She played a key role in Wilson Fisk’s rise to power as Mayor of New York City. Her presence in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer immediately caught attention because of what it means for the timeline.
In the Brand New Day trailer, Rivera is seen honoring Spider-Man at a public ceremony. This creates an interesting situation. Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, built his entire political campaign around opposing vigilantes. He created an Anti-Vigilante Task Force specifically to target masked heroes like Daredevil and Spider-Man. Seeing someone from his inner circle celebrating Spider-Man raises questions about when this ceremony takes place.
Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum had already confirmed that the two projects would connect. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he stated:
“We are communicating extensively with the Spider-Man: Brand New Day team to ensure consistency. We don’t want to reveal anything, but everything exists in the same world and it is important.”
Understanding the Timeline Connection
Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes place four years after the events of No Way Home. Peter Parker has been living alone, erased from everyone’s memory. The ceremony where Rivera honors Spider-Man likely happens before Fisk becomes mayor, or possibly after his time in office ends.
This timeline separation allows both stories to maintain their own tension. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 shows Fisk firmly in control as Mayor, using his power to hunt down vigilantes. The show’s official description states: “Mayor Wilson Fisk crushes New York City underfoot as he hunts down public enemy number one, the Hell’s Kitchen vigilante known as Daredevil.”
If the Spider-Man ceremony happened during Fisk’s time as Mayor, it would contradict everything established about his character. Rivera’s appearance in the trailer suggests she had a political career before aligning with Fisk, placing that ceremony outside the current Born Again timeline.

Jon Bernthal returns as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, in both projects. He appears in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and a special titled The Punisher: One Last Kill will follow the Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 finale on May 12, 2026. This marks the first time the character has appeared in a Spider-Man film.
The street-level focus of both stories also ties them together. Daredevil: Born Again deals with the ground-level fight for New York City’s soul, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day follows a Peter Parker who now operates as a full-time hero without the support of allies like Happy Hogan or Nick Fury.
