The star and creator of the hit show Schitt’s Creek is back on television with a completely different kind of story. Dan Levy just released his new Netflix series, Big Mistakes, and it is nothing like the warm world of the Roses. This time, the comedy comes with a lot of tension, family drama, and organized crime.
The show dropped on April 9, 2026, and it has already started conversations about how Levy is moving away from his old comfort zone. The eight-episode series follows two very unqualified siblings who get pulled into a dangerous criminal world after a simple plan goes very wrong.
What is ‘Big Mistakes’ Actually About?
Big Mistakes focuses on the Dardano family, specifically brother and sister Nicky (Dan Levy) and Morgan (Taylor Ortega). They are not criminals. Nicky is a local pastor, and Morgan is a frustrated teacher. But their dying grandmother wants a specific necklace, and Morgan makes the terrible choice to steal it.
That one small crime leads to a big problem. A dangerous man named Ivan (Mark Ivanir) catches them and blackmails the siblings. He forces them to do more and more risky jobs for his crime organization. The siblings keep making errors, but they keep moving forward into deeper trouble.
The show also includes a strong family drama on the home front. Laurie Metcalf plays Linda, the mother of Nicky and Morgan. She is trying to handle her own mother’s illness while running for mayor. The stress of the campaign mixes with the stress of her children’s criminal activities, creating a very loud and chaotic household.
Dan Levy Explains His Creative Journey
The actor and writer opened up about why he chose to make this kind of show after the massive success of Schitt’s Creek. He admitted that he needed time to figure out what he wanted to say next.
“A lot of time had to pass. When the show ended, there was this immediate conversation of ‘What are you doing next?’ I was playing around with — ‘What scripts am I not reading?’ And it’s like, ‘He’ll never play in an action movie,’ so I was like, ‘Let’s do action. And let’s make it funny.’”
Levy also shared a very personal reason for the show’s central fear. He explained that he has always been scared of being blackmailed into doing crime. That specific fear became the heart of Big Mistakes. He worked with co-creator Rachel Sennott to build a story that mixes thrills with his signature style of family bickering.

A New Kind of Family Story
While Schitt’s Creek was about a rich family losing everything and learning to love each other, Big Mistakes is about a regular family already full of anxiety. Levy says the show looks at the things we inherit from our parents and grandparents.
“The show is an examination of what we inherit from our parents, and our parents’ parents. We are all byproducts of our parents’ experiences… If you come from a yell-y family, this show is going to be very familiar to you.”
The sibling relationship between Nicky and Morgan is the core of the show. They argue constantly and make each other’s lives harder, but they are stuck together. As the criminal pressure builds, they have to figure out if they can trust each other to survive.
Where to Watch ‘Big Mistakes’
All eight episodes of Big Mistakes are now available for streaming exclusively on Netflix. Viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India can watch the full season right now. Each episode runs for about 30 to 35 minutes, making it an easy show to watch over a weekend.
The cast also includes Abby Quinn as the uptight sister Natalie, Jack Innanen as Morgan’s strange boyfriend Max, Boran Kuzum as Yusuf, and Elizabeth Perkins in a key role that becomes very important by the end of the season.
Critical Response to the Netflix Series
The reviews for Big Mistakes are mixed, but most critics agree that the show finds its strength in the family scenes. Some critics find the crime plot confusing, but they praise the actors for their work.
One review noted that the show is a “wild ride” and that “the domestic cringe comedy at its heart means Big Mistakes is far from a major error.” Another critic praised the dynamic between Levy and Ortega, calling their brother-sister fight “a joy to witness.” The show is rated TV-MA for language and violence.
